James Fuller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 27, 2015.
James Kenneth "Ken" Fuller died peacefully in the Skilled Nursing Facility at Holly Creek in Centennial, Colorado on August 26, 2015 at the age of 92.

Ken is survived by his wife, Janice Vitullo Fuller; a son Larry Fuller and wife Barbara, their daughter Briana of Centennial, Colorado; a daughter Lori Slater and husband Bill of Scott City, Kansas, their children James, Grant and Becky; and a daughter Leslie Franz and husband Keith of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is also survived by his siblings, John Fuller and wife Jan of Littleton, Colorado and their families; as well as Marynell Larson and husband Douglas of Fort Collins, Colorado and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, James "Stanley" Fuller and wife Dorothy of Del Norte, Colorado; his mother Thelma Rhodus Shriver and husband Lawrence of Monte Vista, Colorado.

Ken was born on March 15, 1923 in Del Norte, Colorado to Stanley and Thelma. He graduated from Sargent High School in 1941 and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific during World War II in the First Marine Division, First Amphibian Tractor Battalion, being honorably discharged in 1946. Ken then pursued his education at Purdue University, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his 40 year career working at Colorado Central Power Company, followed by Public Service Company of Colorado, retiring as Vice-President of Electrical Engineering and Planning in 1988.

He married Janice Ann Vitullo on March 16, 1951. Beginning in 1953 and continuing over the next eight years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Jan and Ken set about teaching them love, integrity, and honesty. Ken's favorite advice to his children and grandchildren was that Please, Thank-You and I Love You are the most important words in the English Language, and to live by the Golden Rule, treating others as you would like to be treated. His children remember him as a loving, loyal, fun, hard-working father who encouraged them to be the same. Although his family will miss him greatly, they share countless wonderful family memories and rejoice in his wonderful life.

"He didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it."

Ken preferred that no services be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation to Physicians Honor Foundation, in care of Honor Hospice, 4251 Kipling St, #405, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. Donation information and payment options may also be found at www.honorhospice.com, in the Our Foundation section.

During high school a lot of us spent many very happy and safe hours at the Fuller home. For me Mr. and Mrs. Fuller were like my second dad and mom and they were simply the best. Anyone who knew him recognized that Mr. Fuller was a great man in the very best sense. Goodbye.

To Jan and the family, Nedra and I add our thoughts and prayers in Ken's memory. All who worked for and with Ken appreciated his leadership and support during some trying, but very satisfying times. The Pawnee and Southeast projects come to mind. But it was always a pleasure to come to work every day.

I, too, have many memories of working with Ken at Public Service Company of Colorado during the time of construction of Pawnee Generating Station, and especially after that. His demeanor was tough, but he was honest and fair, and gave me one of the greatest gifts in my career: opportunity. At a time when building new power plants was "on hold" while various electric demand, financial, and regulatory issues were emerging, I sought approval to temporarily leave my position as an engineering supervisor and pursue a cross-training program in other business areas of the company, a rare request at that time. When my request finally made it's way to Ken's desk (he was my vice-president), he not only approved it very quickly, he personally encouraged me to take advantage of every opportunity I could to broaden my experience and improve myself. His words of encouragement and friendship helped guide me through many experiences, promotions, and tough times in the following years. I'll never forget and always be grateful to him for his support. My thoughts and prayers are with Jan, Larry and Barb, and the entire family.

Goodbye my friend. What sweet memories I have of the many hours we spent together. Early mornings on the golf course, family parties in your back yard, working together to solve some difficult challenges at PSCO, and the pleasure we had in remembering all those things in the last few years. How I valued your friendship and how I admired your courage and good nature as you struggled with health issues. I will miss you my friend and may you rest in peace.

Jan and I offer our thoughts and prayers to Jan and her family during this time of Ken's passing. I worked with Ken when he became vice president of Electric Engineering and Planning. During that time we were building the Pawnee Generation Station in Brush. I had the opportunity to work very closely with Ken during this project and appreciated his guidance and support. Ken was always willing to make timely decisions to support the project. He asked that the Project Team provide him with decision alternatives and a recommendation so that he could consider his options before making a decision. I particularly remember Jan and Ken coming to our home to help celebrate Pawnee's completion. We were all honored that Jan and Ken came over to celebrate with us. Ken had great values and expected his employees to do their jobs honestly and with integrity. Ken was a great boss and will truly be missed by all who knew him.
