James Arnold Giauque, Jr.
1917-2015
James Arnold Giauque, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 29, 2015 at the age of 97.
Jim was born on December 12, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to James Arnold Giauque and Grace Lucille Harris. He attended South High School and the University of Utah where he graduated in accounting and was a trumpeter in the pep band. Upon graduation he went on an LDS mission to Belgium. When World War II broke out in Europe he was transferred to the Eastern Canadian Mission. He met his wife, Dixie, in the mission home and they were married in Washington D.C. on February 7, 1941 shortly after they both returned home from their respective mission. Their marriage was solemnized in September 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. This loving partnership continued in this life for nearly 65 years until Dixie's passing in 2005.
While attending law school in Washington D.C. in 1940-41, Jim worked for the FBI. He listened to and translated phone calls to and from the French Embassy at a time when Nazi Germany occupied France. Jim and Dixie later moved to Salt Lake City where he began his career at the Utah Oil Refining Company (now BP) as an accountant. That job later took them to live in Singapore, St. Louis, and Chicago.
Jim was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in various callings. In 1982 he and Dixie were called to serve as representatives of the Church on the Island of Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean. Later they served as hosts on Temple Square for ten years. He often expressed his testimony of the Savior and His Atonement. On Jim's last birthday, he took time to declare his love for his family. He also testified of his belief in Jesus Christ and the eternal nature of families as well as his desire for his family to be together forever.
The family expresses gratitude for the tender care given to him during his time at Canyon Creek Senior Living and Sandy Health and Rehab and for his faithful home teacher George Croft. Though his health declined during his later years, he still remained optimistic and cheerfully served others in whatever way he could.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Dixie; his parents; son, Tom; sisters, Gladys Lewis, Ellen Oakes, and Lucille Thatcher and brother, Ken. He is survived by his children; Sharon Samuelson (Cecil), Brent (Susan), Kent (Jan), daughter-in-law, Kathleen Giauque, Jim (Cindy); 24 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Parleys Stake Center, 1870 E. Parleys Canyon Blvd. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the Stake Center on Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services.

May the Croft family from afar pay our respect to the life of our friend, neighbor and teacher, Brother Giauque. Teri and I as well as our children and grandchildren have been blessed to know him. As a lucky home teacher I and other companions throughout the years have been taught from him as we listen ended to his life's adventures and listened to his strong testimony of our Savior, his love Dixie and for the good of life. He surely did it right and his example will continue to guide and encourage all of us.
George,Teri Croft and family.
