In Loving Memory of James Thomas Gibson

August 18, 1944 – May 19, 2025

James Thomas Gibson, a devoted family man, beloved "Papa," and faithful servant, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, at the age of 80. A lifelong resident of Livonia, Michigan, Jim was born on August 18, 1944, and graduated from Livonia Bentley High School in 1963.

He married the love of his life, Karen, on June 19, 1965. Together, they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and faith. After Karen's passing in 2011, Jim found deep comfort in the company of his children and grandchildren. For the last 7 years of his life, he lived with his son Mark and daughter-in-law Catherine, enjoying quiet days, the peacefulness of lake life, and being surrounded by family.

Jim worked for Detroit Diesel for 40 years, retiring in 2003. Known for his strong work ethic, big heart, and steady presence, he embraced life's simple pleasures: bowling, cruises, fishing, softball, and tennis. Jim was also a coach for the Livonia Eagles football team, where he shared his passion for the game and helped teach his boys the value of teamwork. He loved playing chess and enjoyed attending art shows, dance recitals, and concerts for his children and grandchildren. He found great joy in watching all of them play sports - always proud to be cheering from the 50-yard line, wearing their team attire to show his unwavering support.

He was a longtime and devoted member of Kenwood Church of Christ, where he served as both trustee and deacon. Jim lived his faith daily, always stepping up when help was needed, including snow plowing, cutting grass, and taking on building projects for others, offering selfless support and compassion to all.

Jim was a loving father to Kim McGorisk (Chris), Jim Gibson, and Mark Gibson (Catherine). He was the proud Papa of ten grandchildren:

C.J., Mollie, and Dylan (children of Kim and Chris McGorisk),

Cece and Collin (children of Jim Gibson),

Jake, Brad, Grant, Charlotte, and Kennedy (children of Mark and Catherine Gibson).

James Thomas Gibson will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, unwavering devotion to family, and his deep love of life. His legacy lives on in the voices of his grandchildren and the many lives he touched through his gentle presence.

A celebration of life will be held at Kenwood Church of Christ in Livonia, Michigan on July 8, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Kenwood Church of Christ in Jim's memory.

Gibby and Family: I am so sorry about your loss. I always enjoyed hanging out with your dad, whether it was breakfast at Bob Evans, signing MOU's over lunch with him in tow with your dad dressed up as an elf for Christmas, or hanging out with you and him at Bray's while I took a break from being in the hospital with my son while he was in a coma.
Miss you guys. Miss him. He's with Jesus now.

It was a privilege and a fun time growing up with the Gibson´s! My favorite memory is Mr. Gibson and my Dad in the backyard pool in the middle of winter playing Marco Polo with all 6 of us! Running through the snow to climb the ladder and jump through the opening of the big plastic bubble and falling into the warm pool! I´m happy my Papa´s got his friend again and Mr and Mrs. Gibson are together again.
