JAMES P. GILLESPIE
Died in his sleep on August 19, 2017. Born 1931 in Beijing, China to Baptist missionaries Arthur and Pauline Gillespie, James and his three brothers spent their childhood moving between China and the southern U.S. He earned a BS from Wake Forest University (1953), and a MS from the University of Tennessee in botany (1955) and a PhD in education from Vanderbilt University (1970). He worked for the MD Department of Education and Carroll County Public Schools in the decades that followed and taught biology at Essex Community College, Stevenson University, and Frederick Community College. He was an avid Amateur Radio operator (K3DQ) and used Morse code to talk every night with his identical twin brother, Arthur in N.C. He wrote a memoir: Around the World and Headed South, Growing Up a Twin and a Missionary Kid (amazon.com). James is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn, their three children (Laine, Craig and Alison), two grandchildren, and his brothers, Paul and David. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on August 26, 2017 at Bedford Court Sr. Living Community (sunriseseniorliving.com) in Silver Spring, MD. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Montgomery Hospice (montgomeryhospice.org). www.collinsfuneralhome.com

Feeling grateful for the memories growing up in Longford with the Gillespie family. I think of "Mr. Gillespie" as a gentle giant with the most beautiful and compassionate eyes! To Mrs. Gillespie, Allison and Craig I send my love and sympathy. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. To you Laine, I pledge my prayers, friendship and time... whenever you need it. I am here for you.

I was not fortunate to know your Dad, personally, Laine. However, I have heard so many wonderful stories. And being a fellow Ham, of course he had to be a stupendous guy :-) I look forward to reading his life story - that in itself is a great accomplishment having shared that with the world. But above all, he left you in this world. And that is a great gift. All Love and Blessings,

A very wise, thoughtful friend once told me that a man without a daughter is an unlucky man (being an elderly man himself with a daughter).
This man, James Gillespie, was the luckiest man ever to have his devoted and caring daughters and his son; especially you, Laine, for having you dedicate so much of yourself to his care in these last few years. I am sure your life filled him with joy and comfort through the struggles.

Love, Jeannie

Dick and I send our heartfelt condolences to the Gillespie family. Laine, your Dad had such wide ranging interests and gifts. It was a pleasure to meet him and to get to appreciate him through his book and through your loving stories over the years. I know he will always live in your heart. May blessings grace you all.

Love and strength to all of you and esp. my dearest friend Laine. The memory of sharing a meal and a walk in Anchorage, Alaska with your parents many years ago reminds me of what a beautiful kind sweet smart soul your father was. There's nothing easy about losing a parent but time does ease the frequency of the hurt.

My deepest condolences the Gillespie family. What a wonderful and interesting man! I can see his positive influences every day on his daughter Alison, who is one of my work colleagues.

You can often judge the merit of a man by judging the character of the children that he raised. Having known Alison for most of my life, I can say with confidence that we've lost a person of great quality. His obituary serves to remind us all that we can, in fact, live an incredible and fulfilling life.

My condolences.

I remember dinner with the Gillespies, Mr. Gillespie a kind, gentle man, soft-spoken. His knowledge of botany and biology will continue to have an impact through those he influenced and encouraged, his students and family.

I feel blessed to have been a part of James life in the short time he lived with us at Bedford Court and to have seen the unconditional love he had for his wife. Even in his last days he would whisper out for Marilyn. Their marriage is a testament to true love. Our thoughts are with you all. May the Lord bless you with comfort and peace.

James and I never met, but I have met his brothers. I have been impressed with the deep love they all share within this family. I would have enjoyed talking with James about plants and being with him out in nature trying to identify them; or even sat in his class hearing his stories. My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family as you support each other in this time of grieving.
