James Goessling Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 24 to Oct. 25, 2012.
Goessling, James Jim Richard passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the age of 57 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was an adoring husband to his wife of 27 years, Patricia (Patty) Hauser Goessling. Jim is the son of John (Jack) Goessling and the late Bette Anne Goessling, brother to Anne (Tom) Herrmann, John (Anna) Goessling, Tom (Pam) Goessling, Bob (Patsy) Goessling, and Julie (Tom) Matheny, uncle to Michael, Pat, and Kevin Barry, Brendan Whelan, Christopher, Catherine, Corey and Casey Hauser, Libby Herrmann, Kelli and Jake Goessling, Kevin, Kathryn, Claire, and Lily Goessling. Jim, known as Goose or Bubba - went to Christ The King grade school, DeSmet Jesuit High School, where he was a member of the 1973 Missouri State Championship basketball team, and attended University of Missouri St. Louis on a basketball scholarship. He was a member of the Hall of Fame at DeSmet, UMSL and the Missouri Athletic Club. Jim started his career as a Sales Exec with Faber Castell prior to moving into the sports marketing arena - working his marketing magic for the St. Louis Football Cardinals, KMOX Radio, St. Louis Blues, and KTRS and KFNS radio stations, where he was a part owner. He was a member of the 123 Club, Knights of Cauliflower Ear, served two terms as Governor for the Missouri Athletic Club, and member of the Veiled Prophet organization - humbly serving as a walking pirate in the annual VP Parade and official greeter at the annual ball. Bubba, also known as America's Guest brought a smile to all he met. He lived his life with integrity and laughter and made everyone feel special along the way. He was the MVP to many but a great friend to all. Jim has left us with a wonderful gift - a lifetime of great memories. We are all grateful for the time we had with him as a family and a friend. He will be greatly missed. A special thank you to all for the doctors and nurses at Siteman and BJC for their gentle care. Services: A Celebration mass will be held at DeSmet Jesuit High School on Saturday, Oct. 27th 2012 at 11:30. Visitation will be held before mass from 10:00 11:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Jim Goessling DeSmet Scholarship Fund, 233 N. New Ballas Rd. St. Louis, MO 63141, the Siteman Cancer Center, 4921 Parkview Place, St Louis MO 63110 or the charity of your choice.

Bobby & Julie:

Always smile when I think of all the times Jimmy took care of all us when we were too dumb (and young) to know better. Never changed as we got older. He never failed to ask me whenever I saw him about my Mom and Dad and all my siblings. Great guy. As the Jesuits preach "A Man for others"! You were lucky to have such a great older brother and friend. God Bless.

Dear Patty, Jack, Anne, John, Tom, Bob, and Julie,
My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead. I have so many good memories of the “early” years in Ferguson of Jimmy and the rest of the Goessling clan. Jimmy used to walk me to Kindergarten at Griffith School and then of course when Bette Anne was teaching my Mom how to drive with us kids in the back seat and a stick shift no less. Ghoul family picnics also come to mind. Later on, he along with my Dad taught my son Michael the game of golf in Michigan and when he found out what a Blues fan Michael was got him a signed hockey stick and some great tickets to games. Whenever I would run into him over the years I was always welcomed with a big bear hug and a genuine interest in my life. Please know you all will be in my thoughts and prayers…
When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

What an incredible guy. Watching Jim play basketball at DeSmet was a joy. It was just like everything else in his life, not about him, but about others, his teammates. His game was not about individual points, but about screens, tough defense, and above all: rebounds. The way he played ball was the way he lived life.

It was great to re-connect with Jim years later. I loved talking to him after Blues' games. I remember introducing my daughter and her best friend to him after a game. The friend had just enrolled at St. Joe's and hoped to play ball for Jim's sister. I told her: "play the game like this guy, and you will do great." Not surprisingly, that girl made the Varsity as a Freshman. Jim talked to the girls like they were the most important people in the world. My daughter told me later: "What a nice guy!" She had learned about Jim what we all knew and loved.

Jim made me proud to be part of the De Smet class of '73. He will be missed.

I have nothing but great memories growing up with Jimmy at DeSmet and at UMSL. As a matter of fact, I will sometimes bust out laughing just thinking about all the good times we had together in our younger years. Jimmy was truly an inspiring leader and was lucky enough to accomplish more things in his career and make lasting friendships with more people than most of us will ever dream of. He was just plain fun to be around and always had a funny story to tell. He was always in the know and a true celebrity in the St. Louis sports community. Always a gentleman. I will always miss him!

Jim was 2 years ahead of me at DeSmet, during those awesome and emerging early years of our great high school. I did not know Jim him well then, yet he always made eye contact and, if he didn't say "hi" first and I did, he always responded with a sincere "hi" back along with his big friendly and sincere smile. After high school, whenever and wherever I bumped into him, Jim always remembered me by name, said "hi" and always had a few moments to talk...truly a fine example of a great and human man, with a warm heart and a caring soul. I will always remember him with that big smile, and am constantly inspired to greet people and spend a moment with them in the same manner as Jim did. My sincere sympathies and prayers to Jim's family...Respectfully, Joe Lauber - Class of '75

Jim was a treasured friend and a genuine ray of sunlight in this superficial world of Sports.
I will miss seeing him around town, at events, at 1-2-3 meetings. He was one of the good ones, and they are few in number. God bless you Jimmy.

We'll meet our loved once more,
Whose feet have trod the path to God,
Not lost, but gone before."

To Patty and all family and friends of Jim, God blessed all of us by putting Jim in our lives. I am both honored and proud to call him my friend. As many have already said, his stories were entertaining, his heart was big, and his smile was completely infectious. I shared a million laughs with him at the usual fun spots around town, including OB Clark's, sporting events and concerts galore. I am also blessed to have shared laughs with him over the last couple months. As always, despite fighting a tough battle, he was more concerned about how everyone else was doing. I was so grateful for those last visits and will never, ever forget them. So while I am sad to say goodbye, I am happy for him to be at peace. Heaven, as all other angels have known it, will never be the same. An amazing man has arrived to make friends…with everyone! Patty, you are an amazing woman and caretaker, so thank you for being you. I have and will continue to pray for you and the entire Goessling family to have the strength you need now and forever. Jim, thank you, thank you, thank you for being such a great friend.
