James Gray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2017.

James Eldridge “Jim” Gray, 57, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 in Fort Morgan, Alabama as he tried to rescue distressed children in a stormy surf.

Jim was born January 2, 1960 in Longview, Texas as the second child of Patsy and Jack Gray. He grew up in Longview and graduated from Longview High School in 1978, where he was a member of the Lobo golf team. His lifelong passion for golf began at Pinecrest Country Club, where he remembered some of the best times of his youth. He attended Kilgore Junior College and was a Rangerette Manager. In 1982, he graduated from University of North Texas (then North Texas State University) in Denton with a BBA. He began his career as a pharmaceutical rep with Sandoz Nutrition in Nashville. In 1984, he returned to Texas, where he met fellow Longview native, Charlinda Davis. They married February 9, 1985 and were soon the loving parents of Jacob, Tyler and Parker, whom they raised together in the community of Combine/Crandall. The Gray home was, for 31 years, non-stop activity focused on the boys’ sports, music and school activities and Jim was always an integral part and right in the middle of the action. As an ever-present father, he coached them in little league baseball and basketball, and never missed an important event in their life. It was Jim’s unequaled joy to see all three sons graduate from college and succeed masterfully in their individual lives.

He previously served as a Middle School Sunday School teacher and Chairman of the Deacons at Central Baptist Church in Crandall. He also served on the Crandall ISD School Board for two terms while his sons attended Crandall schools. At his passing, Jim was Director of Real Estate with Hospital Corporation of America, based in Nashville.

Jim would often be found fishing in Longview with his lifelong buddy Randy Wood. He loved to grill for his sons’ friends on the patio of their home in Combine and enjoyed playing golf every Sunday with his posse (Joe Fanning, Phil Dickerson, Todd Burgwin & Steve Crittenden). Jim will be remembered for his compassion, his willingness to serve, and a devotion to his family and friends that spanned his entire lifetime. If help was ever needed, Jim was never more than a phone call away. His last act of service was heroic and compassionate.

Jim is survived by his three amazing sons, Jacob Ryan Gray of Lubbock, Tyler Jameson Gray (Tayler) and Parker Davis Gray, along with their mother Charlinda Davis Gray, all of Dallas. He is also survived by his beloved mother Patsy Jane Henderson of Longview, sisters Gloria Gray Gaddis (Stephen) of Canton, GA and Katie Gray Herrington (Joel) of Hallsville, TX. Jim will also be lovingly remembered by nieces Lindsey Gerdes (Jason) of Canton, GA; Anna Lester (Russ) of Lake Jackson, TX; Ellen Reid and nephew Logan Gaddis of Midlothian, TX; great niece, Natalie Gerdes; great nephews, Jackson Gerdes, Wynn Lester, Walker Lester; as well as his sons’ grandparents, Charles and Linda Davis, of Longview.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Jack R. Gray, and his grandparents Mildred & Brents McPherson and Kathleen Gray; and by his sons’ uncle, Derek Todd Davis

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Central Baptist Church in Crandall, TX on June 28th at 2:00 PM. A memorial scholarship fund in Jim’s honor will be established in the near future with Crandall ISD.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim as a HCA client of the Cushman & Wakefield firm. Jim was dedicated, professional, and knowledgable, but more importantly, a genuinely nice, encouraging, and wonderful person to work for and with. My sincere sympathies are extended to Jim's family and the HCA family as Jim is irreplaceable.

Jim and I had a brief stint together at a real estate company in Dallas back in the 1980's and had reconnected a little over a year ago when we worked on the Medical City Frisco acquisition for HCA. He was awesome to work a deal with, even though we were on opposite sides of the table. Jim was a consummate professional and a truly wonderful person. My prayers are with his family and the HCA family.

I am honored to have shared a brief moment in Jim's very full life. He was a great young man in the late 70's and from the comments posted recently, evolved into a great Man, Husband, Father and friend. My condolences on your loss and God's Peace for all. No greater love...

Jim was a pleasure to work with. I likely would not have relocated to Nashville without his encouragement and help. In this way, Jim has certainly affected my life, and I am very grateful. Clearly, Jim's bravery and integrity will be remembered. He was a great person.

Jim had the ability to make everyone he met feel like they had known him for years and were the best of friends. He treated people with dignity, respect, and kindness. Jim had an incredible impact on my life and I loved him dearly. Lord, our hearts are broken and we don't always understand why things happen the way they do this side of heaven. But we place our trust and faith in You and ask that give Charlinda, the boys, Jim's Mom, sisters, and all those who loved Jim, a peace and comfort that only You can give that surpasses our understanding. Wrap Your loving arms around them tightly and carry them through this most difficult time.

My sincere condolences on your loss. Jim had been my HCA asset manager for 5 years and can tell you I have worked for none better than this man. He made my job a pleasure to perform and was always available to work through any leasing issues I had. He would always say "if you need me, just call me any time" and I knew he meant just that. Jim oozed love for his family and seemed to sincerely show an interest in mine always inquiring as to what sport my 4 boys were involved in at the time. I will miss his bubbly personality and his "we can do attitude." Though I am heartbroken over his loss I will strive to keep his portfolio running smooth, just the way he would want it. Rest In Peace my dear friend <3

I wish I could be there for the funeral, but sadly, I cannot. I know it will be standing room only and it will come as no surprise to anyone how many lives and hearts were touched by Jim Gray. By far one of the best people I have ever known. Prayers and condolences for Jim's sons, his mom, siblings, Charlinda, and all of the many friends he has made over the years, including all of us old ones, and his Longview High School classmates, like Chuck Hunt, Randy Wood, Misty Eberhart, Jamie Benson, Jeff Cole, Russell Buckstaff, and way too many more to keep naming them. We loved our Jim.

I know no words that can take away the pain of losing your beloved husband, father, brother and son, Jim. I can only wish for you all much comfort and peace for the weeks and months to come. Suddenly Longview, Tx became a small town again. So many people grew up with the family. Hoping God will grant you all the strength to live on in His name.
