Mr. Green, 93, died Tuesday, Aug. 10. Abram was born in Georgetown County, son of the late Ervin and Susan Green.
His formal education included Booker Washington High School, Allen University of Columbia, Morris College of Sumter where he earned his Bachelor of Science, S.C. State College of Orangeburg where he earned his masters degree, and in 1938 Gupton-Jones School of Embalming in Nashville, Tenn. He taught in the public schools of Florence and Williamsburg County, retired as principal of Tomlinson and Kingstree high schools. He served as a member of the Florence School District 3 board.
He was a skilled pianist and organist, for many years minister of music of Greater St. James AME Church where he served in many other capacities and as a musician for churches in the area.
He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma National Fraternity, Lake City Elks Lodge 1680, Will Do Masonic Lodge 322, Joint-Stock Lodge, Florence County Retired Teachers and a former staff member of Greens Funeral Home, as well as a veteran of the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Porter Green, and son, James A. Green Jr.
Surviving are daughters, Sarah Karim (Khalil) of Chicago and Emma Lee Russell (Dorsey) of Lake City; sons, Lawrence Jamalian Green (Helen) of Centennial, Conn., and Victor M. Jenerette Green; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; in-laws, nieces, nephews and two great-great-grandchildren.
Fraternal rites will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
