James GREER Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jun. 19 to Jun. 20, 2018.
GREER, James (Jim) Eugene October 10, 1952 - June 16, 2018 Jim was a teacher at his core. Whether as husband, father, son, brother, mentor, or friend, Jim always identified and supported the strengths in others - as great teachers always do - and inspired all whom he met to find and strengthen the very best in themselves. Jim met his wife, Marianne (Komarnicki) Greer, when they were students at the University of Saskatchewan in 1971. They were a team, creating and sharing hopes, dreams, and projects. Together they travelled and enjoyed all that life has to offer. They became a "pair o' docs" earning Ph.D's in 1986-7, raised two thoughtful and curious children (Phil Greer and Erin Greer DeLathouwer), mentored their children's significant others (including Sheena [Miller] Greer), and supported the development of six uniquely talented grandchildren (Ada and James DeLathouwer; Theo Summach; Ivy, Paul, and Clark Kish Greer). Jim is survived by his mother (Catherine "Katie" [Schmidt] Greer), four sisters (Sheila [Larry] Eskdale, Darlene [Joe] Nast, Rena [Don] Mazer, and Catherine [Luther Poier] Greer), brother (Ken [Karen] Greer), mother-in-law Ollie Komarnicki, sisters-in-law (Rosellyn [Blaine] Wickerson, Sheri [Duane] Christie, Sister Bonnie), nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts, colleagues, students, and friends. Jim was predeceased by his father, Maurice (Bud) Greer and father-in-law, Mike Komarnicki. Jim has served the U of S over three decades, as a professor of Computational Science and administrative advocate for the practice and scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education. Jim was recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for his scholarly contributions. His legacy and spirit will live on. On Saturday June 16, 2018, Jim passed suddenly, but peacefully, in an instant, despite a flurry of protest around him. We are particularly grateful to passers-by, including Aliona Bocancea, for attempting to save a stranger's life. We are also very grateful for the efforts of the first responders from the Saskatoon Fire Dept (Station 2, Shift 4), the care of Dr. Barry Rieder and the St. Paul's Hospital Emergency Staff; the SPH Co-Pastor, Father Richard and Sister Bonnie for assisting in Jim's transition from this life. Many thanks for the enormous embrace of love, support, kind thoughts, and prayers from around the world. We will all miss Jim profoundly. Please join us in Saskatoon to celebrate Jim's life in a prayer service on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Park Funeral Chapel, and Divine Liturgy on Thursday, 21 June 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More Chapel (Fr. André Lalach), followed by a reception at STM's Choices. In lieu of flowers, should you wish to make a donation to the James E. Greer Teaching, Learning, and Technology Graduate Student Memorial Fund, you may submit your contribution to the University of Saskatchewan, sent to Trina Mortson, University Relations, 110 Science Pl. My some memory of James Greer.

I met James in ITS88 in Montreal while I was still a PhD student. He probably recognized me more at ITS92, and we had more exchanges since then. I invited him once to come to Taiwan to help review some research proposals, probably around 1994 or later. He was a dedicated researcher and enjoyed talking about his view on AIED research. He invited me to join the program committee of AIED95 while he was the program chair. Working with him I noticed that he was a very well-organized person. I also noticed that he was very kind, friendly and helpful to many young researchers, including me in the past.

I was shocked to learn about his passing early this summer. But the pleasant interactions with him in the past remain in my memory forever.

My belated condolences to his family, colleagues, students and friends around the world.

Dear Marianne,
It is unbelievable to me that Jim passed away suddenly as I just met him last week at ITS 2018 in Montreal. I chatted with him
for a while and he told me he was retiring and he wanted to meet more friends before his retirement.
Jim was a great researcher and mentor. He was a fount of wisdom. He gave a lot of guidance, immense support, and help to many researchers including me at Athabasca University to do research in AI in education.
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Jim.

Dear Marianne & Family,
I was shocked and felt so sad to hear about Jim's passing. I have been felt very painful since I got the sad news.

A week ago I signed up and was planning to go to Saskatoon for ARIE lab and his retirement event in September. Our family talked about him just last week and it was so sudden he passed away, I still feel unbelievable.

I regretted that I didn't write to him directly when I thought I would go to the ARIE event.

We, our family send our deepest condolences on the passing of Jim. Words can't express the sadness I feel on the passing of Jim. He is the best supervisor in my life, I appreciated and always feel lucky to have him as my supervisor. His encouragement, inspiration, and caring will be kept in my heart and in my life forever. My family will all dearly miss Jim.

Sincerely,
George and Yang

One of the greats, and so many of us are shattered by his passing. Jim was an inspiration to me as a friend and colleague for some 30 years. He had little time or patience for the trivial, and endless patience and time for the important. I can't remember a single idea I ever had that he couldn't lean back in his chair, stretch his hands behind his head, and say, Well yes, but think about it this way. Jim was so generous to me personally, and to others on campus. His dedication to excellent teaching was unapologetic in an environment where teaching held second-tier status to research. Of course, he was also a great researcher, which made his championing of teaching all the more impressive. But it wasn't the things he did that I'll miss the most; it's his deep generosity of spirit, and his genuine good nature and belief we can make the university/city/community/planet a better placethose rare human and deeply personal qualities I'll miss most. Rest in peace, my friend.

Jim was one of the best researcher-teachers i have come across in my life. He was passionate about growing AIED as a research area and never gave up on it even during its lull. He was also fiercely-driven to prepare his students be catalysts of transformation of human advancement. In every conversation i had with him, whether during conferences or in his role as the advisor/reviewer for Athabasca University, he always had something new to discuss and shared his brilliant line of thinking. The ultimate teacher, visionary and a beautiful human, lost to time.

Words can't express the sadness I feel on the passing of Jim. I came to the U of S as a foreign student in the 1980's. Jim was my teacher, my thesis supervisor, a caring mentor and friend. I returned to the U of S several times over the years. Jim was always there for me. Condolences to his family and friends and all his students around the world whose lives he touched.

Jim was a man who positively impacted many young lives throughout his career. He will be missed by many while the gift of knowledge, he so willingly gave, will live on.
His family has lost a very special member. Wishing you all peace at this difficult time.
