JAMES R. HALEY

HALEY JAMES R., of Harper Woods, Michigan, died on June 10, 2014 at Sunrise Assisted Living Center, Grosse Pointe Woods. He was 85. He was born on November 27, 1927 in Detroit. He attended Denby High School and Capital University. In 1952 he married Janet Lipke. Jim served honorably in the US Army, he served in the NIKE Air Defense System in the Chicago area. Jim worked in a number of positions in the Harper Woods School System, including Principal of the Middle school and the High School. He was also the acting Superintendent of the Harper Woods School System. He served the School System in these many roles for 40 years. Jim was active in the Political Leadership of the City of Harper Woods. He was elected as a member of the City Council following that, he was elected Mayor for two terms. He served the city in these roles for 26 years. He was an active member of the Harper Woods Rotary Club for nearly 50 years. Jim was a leader in a number of other community organizations. He will be greatly missed by his beloved family and his wide circle of friends. Jim is survived by his daughter Jill McCormick and grandson Devon James Haley. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet, his parents Luella and Frank Haley, his brother Jerry, and sister Betty. Jim was a rare man. He was admired and trusted by everyone who knew him and worked with him. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, 2014 at First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grosse Pointe Woods. Memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to Dr. Walter A.
