As a member of the class of 1971, I can tell you that after 50 years Mr. Hawk, my senior history teacher, orchestrated the most memorable teaching event of my life. Over the course of several weeks discussions Mr. Hawk introduced us to a country called Vietnam. In the final class on Vietnam, Mr. Hawk had a former student and recently returned combat veteran in the Vietnam War talk to our class about Vietnam from his perspective. It was epic.
Thank you Mr. Hawk. I remember you.

Mr. Hawk was my history teacher in 1974, and I have thought often of him. He treated his students with respect and inspired me to want to my best. I hope he knew how many students were grateful to have him as a teacher. Best teacher I ever had. An exceptional communicator and a very kind person.

Mr. Hawk was my history teacher in 1982 and my favorite overall. I'll never forget his humor and dedication. I've thought of him often throughout the years and still remember his class discussion on the Burr-Hamilton duel. It's good to know that he had a full life and continued to influence others. He was one in a million.

West Campus fam...I think we all remember Mr Hawk with a smile. I will never forget some of his famous lines:
Oh look, Matt Feaster walked in to my class. There must have been an earthquake at all the jails and the gates busted open!
Please remember the tools of scholarship. Something to write with and something to write on.
Always day and date your notes. (I still do this at work!)
Mr. Feaster, I can always tell when you haven't been taking your medication. You have to take one of those little white pills every day just like the doctor told you.
RIP Mr. Hawk. God bless.

Mr. Hawk was a dedicated teacher and a kind and compassionate man. I will never forget the kind way he cared for his wife Linda who suffered with MS. He always had a ready smile, witty & great sense of humor. He is gone now from our sight but never forgotten by those of us who knew him and appreciated the fine person he was!

I have many fond memories from Mr. Hawk's Public Speaking and U.S. History class. I'll never forget how he taught us about the industrial revolution and the assembly line. He had a row students fold a different part of a paper airplane vs. one student make the airplane on his own. Our factory line quadrupled production and the class swarmed with paper airplanes.
Thank you Mr. Hawk for teaching us to question, reflect and think some more. You've made an enormous impact with your life.

If we're lucky, we all get that one teacher who has a profound influence on our lives. Mr. Hawk was that teacher for me. Even now, almost 40 years later, my friends from Johnson and I still tell stories about Mr. Hawk.
Mr. Hawk, we still love you after all these years. Thanks for being more than a teacher. And thanks for the cool nicknames you gave our speech and debate team.

Mr. Hawke, was my favorite teacher from High School. I can remember my first day of class the first year that West Campus opened. The books were brand new, we grabbed one and he told us how nice and new they were, so go put them back so that they stay new. And then proceeded to teach in stories, and examples that were so detailed, that I still remember nearly every lesson 30 years later. Good Speed good sir, you helped shape my life.

Some of my favorite high school moments were in Mr. Hawk's public speaking class; learning with lots of laughter. He provided us an environment where we could ask questions and share our thoughts without judgement. I hope his family finds some comfort in the wonderful memories and the gift of intelligent, articulate speech he afforded to so many people.

Mr. Hawk taught my older sister and I couldn't wait to take his public speaking class as a junior. As a senior I had him again for government/street law. I looked forward to his class everyday. He had a huge impact on my life as I am now in my 10th year of teaching history to sophomores and juniors. He will be deeply missed by all of his former students.

Mr. Hawk forever changed my life. As a libertarian he debated with me from the opposing point of view that challenged me, sharpened my arguments, and without ever once treating me without respect. I was a junior in high school in 1968. I always wondered what happened to him. What a wonderful person . I am forever grateful he touched my life.

He was a precious teacher and friend. He taught social studies, creating a class called "Racism" that I took as a junior at Hiram Johnson Senior High in 1978. His class added to my parent's teaching that we are all brothers and sisters on this planet, and helped to form my understanding of how to treat all people. It was a warning of how badly things can go wrong socially. I was also on his speech and debate squad and I cherish my trophies gained by his training. I still use the flow chart model he taught me when a situation at work gets complicated and I need to respond to specific points. Besides his excellent teaching skills and care for his students, he was a hilarious person. Our yearbook captured some of his pranks that were epic. See you on the other side Mr. Hawk.

Mr. Hawk was my homeroom and social studies teacher at Hiram Johnson. His wisdom and open mind helped me through some trying times as a teen. He was a very effective teacher and his humor enabled his students to relate to the basics of the subject. To us, he was the "cool" teacher. To this day, when I'm asked what teacher at HJH was my favorite, my answer is always Mr. James Hawk. RIP, fine man. Sympathies to his family.
