James Hays Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 24 to Aug. 26, 2011.
HAYS, DR. JAMES MARTIN JR. - age 56 went to be with his beloved Lord on Monday, August 22, 2011 after a long struggle with ALS. He was the light of our lives, a father, husband, brother, and uncle who taught us by example with passion what it means to live a faith driven life of love and service to others. He was a man of love and laughter who always had a twinkle in his eye and a kind word at the ready. He lived to make the world a more joyful and compassionate place. Jim attended the Baylor School in Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis in 1981 and did his internship and residency in Memphis as well. He served as an OB/GYN in Knoxville and delivered more than 7,000 babies. Jim was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. He was the Chairman of the TN Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Jim co-founded the Special Attention Clinic at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in 1990 which provided development, training, and staffing for the evaluation of abused children. Jim was active in his church, serving as a deacon for Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church and served as co-director of the Small Group Ministry. One of Jim's favorite activities was supporting the summer swim leagues which all of his children participated in. He was a United States Swimming Meet certified official and was involved with the Greater Knoxville Area Independent Swim Association serving as Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the organization. He also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. James Hays. He is survived by his wife, Nancy and his four children, Mary Christine, James Martin, Ann Katherine, and Elizabeth Kelley. He is also survived by his mother, Louise Collins Hays, step-mother Ursula Hays, and siblings Dr. William Hays, Dr. Christopher Hays, Terri Miller, and Angela Hays as well as several nieces and nephews. At this time of loss, we feel overwhelmed by the gifts of prayer and support poured out to us from so many who loved him. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church with Dr. L. Holton Siegling, Jr., Dr. Michael V. Stanfield and Reverend Mark D. Lampley officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at in Barron Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The ALS Association, Development Department, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301 or to Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, 3700 Keowee Ave. Knoxville, TN 37919. My goodness, I just found out via an OB/GYN group email about the ALS walk in memory of Dr. Hays. I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Hays delivered my Benjamin in 1989. He knew I'd had a negative experience with my labor for my first child, so he made a point to come in early on his call weekend to be there for the delivery. I will always remember him with love for his caring manner. Thank you for sharing him with so many of us under his medical care. What a dear man.

My condolences to Dr. Hays family. He was such a kind and caring man and had the best bedside manner of any doctor I have ever been to.

He was my doctor for over 20 years ( 2 miscarriages and 3 deliveries) and helped me through so much. My last pregnancy was horrible from the very beginning and he was always supportive. I was in the hospital quite a bit and if not I had to see him weekly for several months. He was always encouraging and kept me going when most days I was so sick I didn't feel like I would survive.

He was a great man and touched so many lives over the years. He was definitely more than a doctor to me, he was my friend.

I will miss Dr. Hays so much. He always had a smile and kind word every time I saw him. I worked with him for many years and he was always so happy in his life. He adored his family and bragged on them all the time. I know you have an empty spot where he left but he is with the Lord now and is completely healed! God bless you and your family and I hope he will provide comfort for each of you.

Dr. Hayes was a good mentor and I will cherish the time he spent mentoring me. He was always kind, patient, very understanding, and very supportive. As a swim team father, he was also enthusiastic about his children and their friends (including me!). I will always remember him being such a happy man in all respects, and how much he loved his wife and children.

I first met Dr. Hays when i was 18 years old, my family Dr. had discovered a large tumor on my uterus and refered me to him. They thought at the time that i had cancer this was my first surgery and first time in a hospital for anything, i was so scared. But I fell totally in love with Dr. Hays we became instant friends. His smile and sincere compassion were like no other Dr. ive ever known, he spent the next 17 years treating me and i never once dreaded going for a visit. He was my friend as well as my Doctor. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I first met Dr. Hays when I miscarried my first pregnancy. I will never forget how caring and patient he was with me. He sat by me holding my hand until I was ready for my procedure. He called my home the following morning to check on me. Dr. Hays has always and will continue to have a special place in my heart. Thank you family for sharing him with us. He had the God given talents of a doctor.

Jim was a friend of mine in college; we were fraternity brothers at the University of Tennnesse. He obviously lived his life to the fullest and was a dedicated physician and community leader. I have great memories of Jim and I regret not seeing him more often once college ended. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. Robert Overbey, Houston TX

Back in 1991/92, I was a patient at Lisa Ross McNabb Birthing Center, and was unable to deliver there, (the baby kept fliping the wrong way in the last month). Dr. Hays was their backup and i went to him for ultra sounds. We chose to induce, as Dr. Hays was going out of town in a few days and i wanted HIM to deliver. He was such a kind a wonderful doctor and a kind person. I kept him as my doctor afterwards.

My prayers are with his family. Heaven welcomed home a precious soul!

When he walked into the exam room, he called me friend. He delivered my two wonderful girls. He spent so much time during his exams talking to me about my life that I was afraid he would be making all of his other patients wait. He was an excellent doctor, as he performed some minor procedures that made my life so much better. I loved him, was a patient from 1986, and will forever remember the compassion and love he shared with his patients. I miss him every time I have my yearly check up with my new doctor. He was truly special. And yes, he did have a twinkle in his eye.

To the family of Dr. Hays. He was my OB doctor in 1988 and I had problems and had to have a C-section which Dr. Hays performed. I remembered him asking me if I had picked out a name since we knew it was a boy. I said I had and he asked me and I said Shaun but I was not sure which way to spell, Shaun or Shawn. He liked Shaun and his dad and I chose that spelling. That young man is all grown up now and an EMT and recently and got married August 13, 2011. Things turned out well thanks to Dr. Hays. Shaun is such a blessing to his family. We pray that God gives you comfort in the coming days and years to come for getting through the difficult time ahead. We know he will be greatly missed by all.
