James Hill, Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2012.
Dr. James Larance Hill was born on the 21st of August 1928, the fourth of seven children born to Jerome and Ida Bell Hill in Austin.

Dr. Hill received his bachelor's degree from Huston-Tillotson College in 1953 and then began his career in education as a high school counselor, mathematics teacher and band director with the Abilene School District. He served as deputy commissioner with the Texas Education Agency and as director of the southwest field office for Educational Testing Services before becoming an associate vice president for administration and public affairs in 1993 at the University of Texas. From June 2000 until January 2007, he served as vice president for community and school relations.

As the first African-American vice president at UT, Hill provided exemplary leadership, supervision and general management of the following offices and programs: Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, University Interscholastic League, Neighborhood Longhorns, Community and School Relations, University Outreach Programs and Pre-College Youth Development. He participated in numerous community and University activities, including the Task Force for Austin Major Employees, Martin Luther King Jr. Statue Committee, Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition, Affirmative Action Working Group Committees, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum Foundation, Austin Entrepreneurial Project and UT Faculty and Deans' Council.

Hill retired from UT in January 2007, but still served as Senior Vice President, special assistant to the president.

"Dr. Hill's work made an enduring impact on our university's relationship with underrepresented populations and the local community," President Bill Powers said. "He strengthened our dedication to diversity, inclusion and cultural richness. He forged important and mutually beneficial partnerships with state leaders and key constituents, which has helped the university to understand the needs and expectations of our neighbors and fellow citizens."

His exemplary life has been a role model to many and will live on through the establishment of the James Hill Scholarship Fund created by the African American Staff Advocating Progress Association at the University of Texas. The scholarship is for deserving African-American entering freshmen who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need for four years of undergraduate study.

Dr. Hill is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-two years, Geraldine; daughter, Jacqueline Howard and husband, Charles, of Pasadena, California; grandchildren, Pamela Tyus and husband, David, of West Covina California, Charles Howard and wife, Dionne, of Northridge, California; great-grandchildren, Christopher James Howard, Anthony Tyus, Miles Lawrence Howard; sisters Irene Thompson, Wray Plicque; brother, Doxy Hill, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.

In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family has suggested that memorials be made to: Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon Street, Austin, TX, 78702 and The University of Texas' Ex-Students' Association, P.O. Box 142563, Austin, TX, 78714.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five until eight o'clock in the evening on Friday, the 7th of September 2012.

Funeral services will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 8th of September, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1010 East 10th Street, Austin, TX, 78702. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, in Austin.

Mr. Hill taught me to play the bass tuba in the Woodson High School band. He helped me develop self discipline --something that has served me well over the years. I feel lucky and blessed to have known him. Dr. Hill was a real role model for all of us.... a kind and gentle spirit.

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Hill while a student at UT in the early mid 1990s. He was a great source of support and encouragement to black student leaders on campus and taught us many lessons simply by being who he was. Thoughts and prayers to the family. The world needs more men like Dr. Hill.

Dr. Hill was a man of quiet dignity and a gracious temperament. He achieved remarkable milestones in educational leadership. I will remember this uniquely great man with respect and affection.

I never had the privilege of meeting Doc Hill face to face, but I felt like I knew him. My husband, Don Graham, would come home each Saturday with the following info: what he [Don] had shot, what he could have shot, and what he should have shot. But always the most interesting report followed: what he and Doc had talked about while trying to outdo each other in the competition. Their golf cart conversation always morphed into more interesting, important issues that well transcended the game. I always enjoyed listening to the wit and wisdom of Doc, even secondhand. He will be missed.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.

For the past five years, it has been a great pleasure for me to play golf and share a cart with "Doc" Hill. During those rounds, when we weren't hitting it into the woods, or making pars, we solved most of the problems of UT football—and the world, for that matter. It will be hard not to think of Doc every time I play golf hereafter.
I feel his loss keenly.

Dr. Hill was one of the founders of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators. He was also a Life Member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. He touched many lives. I loved his gentle kindness. He was consistently helpful to me during my tenure as president of TABSE. He and his wife were an ideal couple. They were wonderful neighbors and friends. My heart is heavy but I am extremely blessed to have had him in my world. Glory be to God as we celebrate his life! Dr. Mary L. Thomas

I was honored to work in Dr. Hill's Office as a student associate under the direction of Mrs. Lillie Morrison Miller. I learned so much from my experience, and I will be forever grateful to have known such amazing individuals. Their contribution to my life is priceless, and I strive every day to make an impact on the world that would make them both proud to have invested in me. Dr. Hill was a man of great character, and when I think of his amazing accomplishments, I think of Romans 12:11: Dr. Hill was not slothful in business but a very effective leader of many major programs and a supporter of student efforts at the University; Dr. Hill was fervent in spirit, never wavering but persevering beyond adversity; Dr. Hill's tireless service to our university faculty and staff, students, and overall community was truly a reflection of his spiritual character. He will be missed, but we should all keep his legacy alive by following the example that he set. He truly lived an extraordinary life! My prayers are with his family during this time.

I never had the priviledge of working with Dr. Hill on a professional level. I knew "Doc", as his golf buddies called him, through the many rounds of golf we played together. Doc's character traits,
honesty, integrity, perserverance, respect, responsibility, courtesy, and sportsmanship are the same that are extolled by the game he loved. Doc will be greatly missed by his Saturday morning golf group.Hook em Horns,Doc!

I remember being at the Agency as a little girl with my mom when she worked for Dr. Hill and later in life when he attended my wedding. He has remained a steadfast family friend through the years and our lives are richer as a result. Prayers and blessings to his sweet family along with the pride of knowing the legacy he leaves as a hero for Texas education.
