James Hogue Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2025.
James Russell Hogue, 76, of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024.

Born November 20, 1948, in Germany to a military family, James (Jim) Jim demonstrated a lifelong commitment to excellence. A National Merit Scholarship Finalist in high school, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Jim began his professional career at Commercial Credit in Baltimore, Maryland and later spent many years at the Institute for Defense Analyses' Center for Computing Sciences in Bowie, Maryland, where he worked until his retirement in 2018. A technology enthusiast from an early age, Jim's passion for innovation was evident throughout his life. In 1997, he created a family website, showcasing his forward-thinking approach to technology.

Jim and his wife Evelyn settled in Columbia, Maryland, where they raised their three children, David, Sharon, and Brian. Jim's family was at the heart of everything he did, and he cherished the time spent with his children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family.

Jim was a man of many interests - he loved photography, building computers, movies, music and reading. In retirement, he ventured into writing -- self-publishing a novel of which he was especially proud. He had a deep love for the game of bridge and had a great time playing with his friend Ken.

Jim was known for his eagerness to help others. Whether it was providing computers to friends and family, offering a ride to a grandchild, or being there for a friend who needed support, Jim was always ready to lend a hand. He donated to many projects at DonorsChoose, which helps teachers in need by supporting public classroom projects. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many.

Jim and Evelyn recently moved to the Residences at Vantage Point retirement community in Columbia, where they started a new chapter in their life. He loved the library, the pub breakfasts, playing bridge, and he was thrilled to settle into his new home despite the health challenges he faced. Jim battled multiple sclerosis for many years but never complained, serving as a model of strength and resilience for his friends and family.

Jim is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, David (Becky), Sharon (Sean), and Brian (Mary); his seven grandchildren; his sister, Martha; his brother, Rick; his nephews and nieces; and his two grand-dogs. He was predeceased by his parents Russ and Barbara Hogue; and his sister Margaret.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held February 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Residences at Vantage Point. For more information, please contact Sharon Hogue at [email protected].

Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His legacy of kindness, intelligence, and unwavering support will live on in all who knew him.

Jim and I worked together at IDA. Jim was very kind and thoughtful. He worked hard to help people with technical problems. He was very professional but also had a great sense of humor. He helped make IDA better not only through his technical contributions but also through the care he gave to each person.

My wife and I were out of town at another funeral, and I was not able to attend Jim's memorial service. I am sorry to have missed it.

Best regards and condolences to Evelyn, Sharon, David, Brian, and the Hogue family.

Skiing at Killington. We would go up on a Friday, ski Saturday and Sunday, and drive back on Monday just like Jim said he did with his children many times.

Uncle Jim was a phenomenal man. His kindness shined through his eyes. His generosity was magnified in this world to so many. I enjoyed my visits with him when he visited Texas. He will be missed.
