He might be gone but his work lives on. A great tribute to a Naval Historian and as well as the memory of those who served in the United States Navy. His work will read for years to come.

I was just in the process of sending James my accolades on two books I have recently read again after sitting on the shelf for many years. Looking up his website I am very taken back regarding his passing away. Very unfortunate. My condolences to his family. Just reading "Neptune Inferno" again I am amazed at how comprehensive this book was.

My deepest condolences on Mr. Hornfischers passing. Having read and re-read many times "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailor's" his brilliant work honors the sacrifice of those warriors of the sea. Rest in Peace Sir.....and thank you.

Just finished reading his last book completed by his wife. Excellent work a true tribute to this great Naval Historian. It is an important review of U.S. Navy history post World War II. A time period with very little written about. I learned a lot about that time period. I will miss reading his insights and reporting on the history of the United States Navy. Thankfully there are videos of his talks on YouTube which are well worth watching. Fair Winds and Following Sea...

I only just learned of Jim´s passing today when I read the preface to his last book. I am stunned. Jim was one of the best historians I have ever read. I am grateful for the opportunity to have read his work which clearly took enormous and painstaking research to produce. He told the personal stories of servicemen that were never known by others. I will truly miss him. I am also grateful to have corresponded with him from time to time. I am very sorry for your loss.

I just opened my brand new copy of "Who Can Hope the Sea", and am tremendously shocked and saddened to read of Mr Hornfischer´s passing. What a devastating loss for his family and for his fans. I´ve read all of his Naval histories, and have truly enjoyed them all. I read a lot of Naval History, and Mr. Hornfischer´s work is among my favorites. In particular, I found Neptune´s Inferno to be a truly moving and meaningful work.
My deepest sympathies to his family for your loss. May his memory be eternal.

I didn't know Jim, but I have been reading his books for years (and learning a lot). I'm so sad to see this notice of his passing. I always say that finishing a great book is like saying goodbye to a friend, so that makes this doubly sad.

So sorry for your loss. Mr Hornfischer was a story teller for the ages! "Tin Can Sailors" was masterful in telling of an Epic Battle. We were blessed to have had him amongst us.

Among the finest Naval Historians I have ever read. Brought the Pacific Battles into my study. It was difficult for me to put his books down when I started reading them. A loss to us all,

One of the finest historians. I had the great opportunity to hear him speak and converse, by email as well.
