My first memory of Jim is from August 1970 on the first cross-country team practice in Ashland, Oregon. After running practice, he invited me to his house for dinner when I met the rest of his family, which began a life-long friendship. His kindness, generosity, and hospitality will always be in my thoughts of him. Besides running, we always shared a love for the outdoors, and we had countless memorable camping trips. After I moved to North Carolina we stayed in contact, and I saw him every time I returned for a visit, and I'll always treasure memories of when he and his wife, Gwen, visited here as part of their wedding anniversary celebration.

Jim was a fantastic person. He was a regular visitor to Billings Farm, and had several projects there. My fondest memory was Jim taking my Dad, John Billings fishing on the mouth of the Rogue River in Gold Beach. It was a calm day so Jim took us out the mouth of the river to do some rock fishing. We were treated when a whale came by the little boat, nearly close enough to touch. Needless to say, that was a glorious moment. Thank you Jim so much. We miss you. Love, Mary, Larry and Moz James
