James "Jim" Jarrell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2025.
James "Jim" William Jarrell was born in Longmont, Colorado, on September 14, 1952, and was called home by God on December 30, 2024.

Jim was a man with a big heart who loved his family and was always there for friends in need. He shared his love for fishing with those around him, especially his sons and his grandson Henry, who learned the joys of fishing and adventure at Jim's side. Camping in Eastern Oregon during the annual "Spring Camp" was a cherished tradition for Jim, as were many other adventures.

Jim earned his Eagle Scout and continued to give back to his community throughout his life. He used his organizational talents to host church dinners, organize children's fishing derbies at Hyatt Lake, and was a leader with Ducks Unlimited. One of his proudest moments was shaking hands with General Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of Desert Storm.

Jim earned a business degree and began his career managing Angelo's Pizza Parlor, where he created the "JJ Special," a pizza still on the menu 50 years later. He later thrived as a salesman before dedicating 22 loyal years to Timber Products, from which he retired last year.

Known as the "King" of peanut brittle, Jim made countless batches of his treat each December, spreading joy to friends and family across the Rogue Valley. Jim was a kind, well-known, and respected man who touched many lives. Jim now rests in the glory of God's presence.

Jim was preceded in death by his two older sons, John H. Jarrell and Scott J. Jarrell.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Jarrell; son, Bill Jarrell; sister, Sandy Speasl; sister, Vickie Jarrell; brother, Dan Jarrell; granddaughter, Jocelyn Meerten; great-granddaughters, Miyah and Zariah Meerten; daughter-in-law, Jeanna Bush; and grandson, Henry E. Jarrell.

Jim's legacy of love, kindness, and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

My first memory of Jim is from August 1970 on the first cross-country team practice in Ashland, Oregon. After running practice, he invited me to his house for dinner when I met the rest of his family, which began a life-long friendship. His kindness, generosity, and hospitality will always be in my thoughts of him. Besides running, we always shared a love for the outdoors, and we had countless memorable camping trips. After I moved to North Carolina we stayed in contact, and I saw him every time I returned for a visit, and I'll always treasure memories of when he and his wife, Gwen, visited here as part of their wedding anniversary celebration.

Jim was a fantastic person. He was a regular visitor to Billings Farm, and had several projects there. My fondest memory was Jim taking my Dad, John Billings fishing on the mouth of the Rogue River in Gold Beach. It was a calm day so Jim took us out the mouth of the river to do some rock fishing. We were treated when a whale came by the little boat, nearly close enough to touch. Needless to say, that was a glorious moment. Thank you Jim so much. We miss you. Love, Mary, Larry and Moz James
