James "Jim" Overstreet Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2024.
James "Jim" Mitchell Overstreet passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Briggs, his father, Jack Overstreet Sr., his stepmother, Jan Overstreet, his older brother, Michael Overstreet, and his beloved daughter, Sara Overstreet.

Born on September 22, 1958, Jim grew up in San Jose alongside his three siblings, Michael Overstreet, Jack Overstreet and Tracy Carpenter. He attended Andrew Hill High School and San Jose City College, where he played football and formed many life-long friendships.

Jim's prominent 29-year career in the San Jose Police Department wasn't just a job, it was a defining aspect of who he was. Serving in MERGE, Robbery, and Patrol, Jim found fulfillment and purpose in his career. His fellow officers weren't just colleagues; they were his chosen family, sharing in his triumphs and offering support through life's challenges.

Jim's presence was larger than life, and he was always unapologetically himself. Despite his tough exterior, Jim cared deeply for those he surrounded himself with- his children, Jessica & Josh Stevens, Alexa & Andrew Carcova, and Sara Overstreet, his three grandchildren, Logan Stevens, Sofie Carcova, and Kellen Carcova, his younger brother, Jack Overstreet and his "boys," his inseparable group of closest friends.

He took great pride in the accomplishments of his daughters, and his grandkids had a unique ability to bring out the softer side of their "Grandpa" and "Papa". Seeing his granddaughter and grandsons brought an immediate smile to his face, and their boundless energy and antics brought him much laughter and happiness over the last eight years.

Jim enjoyed being in the company of his close friends, spending time on the golf course when he was able, and his love for sports, especially football, was unmistakable. He had a true talent for storytelling that drew you in immediately. Whether sharing personal experiences, reminiscing about the past or recounting television or sports highlights, his stories were always captivating and always unforgettable.

He will be missed profoundly, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he knew and loved. A private service will be held for family and close friends.

I worked for Jim on Mids for several years because he was a great sergeant and encouraged pro-active police work. He was always supportive and taught me a a lot in my early years. He will be missed but will always be remembered.

Jim and I were the unlikeliest of friends. He was the tough Merge Cop and I was the dorky Japanese female cop. We worked in adjacent Districts and we´d often meet at the Jack In The Box at Capitol/Alum Rock. His straightforward and unrelenting opinions use to make me laugh. There wasn´t anything we couldn´t or wouldn´t talk about. I will admit there were times I wanted to plug my ears. You were like the know-it-all big brother that was always steadfast in loyalty and honesty. My heart is broken by your absence, but I will always appreciate you and our friendship. I´ve already asked God to give you a squeeze for me.

Jim was the beloved parent of his two girls I had as my students. He loved those two so much; he had learned that I had a problem storing and distributing the aprons in my home ec room. AKA social studies, public speaking, etc.. the next thing, I know, he has made a new and improved rack for storing and distributing aprons to my budding chefs.
When I saw him at the wedding, I don´t think there was anyone who is standing any straighter, prouder, or filled with love, then Jim was that day.
His memory will always be a blessing.

I knew you from infancy and as a child but only briefly on special occasions as an adult. Your mom, however, always kept me abreast of your grown up years. I am saddened by your loss and know your family and friends will miss you deeply. Your Aunt Priss

My first memory of Jim was him pulling pigtails and spitting paper wads on the clock in math class. This was in the sixth grade. We shared a lot of memories in high school and a call or two on birthdays since. A more recent special memory. My husband died last May. At a time when Jim was going through a lot of personal issues himself, he still reached out to offer his condolences. We started talking regularly on his better days. I was becoming to know Jim (he shocked me a lot) and Jim and I had become friends. Anyway, at work I joined a football fantasy king of the hill "thing" but didn't take it that serious. Jim offered to help me. Every week through good or bad days, in the hospital or at home, even when he had company or lost his phone, Jim would find a way to call and help me pick our winning teams. Super Bowl Sunday while driving home from a Super Bowl party, I called Jim to tell him we took first place.

I still have a lot to tell him. I'm going to miss my friend. My condolences go out to his family. Your obituary is spot on.

Jimmy and I were promoted to sergeant together in Oct 1998 by Chief Lansdowne. It was such a great day and a highlight in our careers. There were times I nearly peed myself when he got on a rant about something. You will be sorely missed my friend. I imagine you "straightening out" a few angels in Heaven right about now. Grant unto him eternal rest, O Lord, and May Perpetual Light shine upon him. (Photo: J. Overstreet, J. Spicer, P. Francois

I´m deeply saddened to hear of Jim´s passing. We went to the same HS together, he graduated a year before me . Last time I saw him we had a little chat at our multi year AHHS reunion. I always knew he put on a tough outer shell but, inside a heart of gold. May Jim rest in paradise and be reunited with all those he loved fly high falcon brother

We visited Jim in 2022. He flew us out, the usual generous Jim. Friends since 12 yrs old. Played baseball, football and some wrestling in hs. Shared many great times. He loved my Mom and there disscussions got pretty heated at times, he teased the heck out of her. Lol. RIP Jim, i love you brother!

Jimmy was my right fielder on the varsity baseball team early in my coaching career at Andrew Hill High School. He was a great kid and I always enjoyed him at practice & at games. He was always a presence and a leader. Later on our paths crossed professionally. He was a pleasure to work with and an outstanding police officer. I always smiled as he always addressed me as "Coach" even at work. I saw him periodically after he retired. He was a wonderful man.

I have been friends with Jim since age 11. We played football and baseball together from age 11 through high school. We also wrestled in high school. I left town right after high school. Whenever I came back to town, I looked Jim up. I stayed at Jim´s house many times over the years when I came back to town. I went to see him a couple of times in AZ. Just last year I spent 4 days with him. Moreover, he had my parents and me over for a Super bowl party last year. Pictures attached. Jim knew how I felt when my son passed away this past year. He was worried about me. He called many times to check on me. It´s so sad that this last surgery didn´t go so well. He was so looking forward to playing with his grandkids and golf again. I know that he loved his brother and sister. He loved his girls and grandkids. He was a loyal friend. I knew that he loved me and he knew that I loved him. We will miss him.

I worked with Jim when I first transferred to SJPD. He was always the first one to show up to the call. His energy was infectious and he always wore a smile on his face that gave you confidence. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, Jim.

Jim came on the police department the same time as me. In fact, his badge # was just a few away from mine. He was indeed larger than life; he spoke honestly and forcefully, but he could be gentle and persuasive with the toughest of characters. He was tough, but had a soft heart for those he cared about and those who needed a push in the right direction. Jim was a cop's cop - fair but tenacious and unrelenting. He had a sense of humor and yet little patience for idiots. He was a couple months younger than me, and I feel like even though we didn't hang out or were best buds, I've lost a friend and an actual part of my history. God bless his soul and may he be reunited with the ones he loved.

Several years ago I got lost in the woods in Colorado while mtn biking..
Thanks Jim for booking the first flight out to assist in the search but the caveat was Dana was not allowed to come along and she had to tell my Dad I was lost!
Alls well as search and rescue found me several hours later..but Jim had alot to say about the entire matter; as always!

we had a ton of laughs over the years/i think one of my favorites is when he watched the entire time when i left a horrible voice message for a dear friend-i didn´t know i was being recorded and jim and i realized it at same time. it wasn´t funny 30 years ago when it happened but somehow i found a way to laugh with him about it soooooo many times over the years. we didn´t even have to tell the whole story we just mentioned answering machines and we both "knew"
