James Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 14, 2023.
James Carrol Johnson, 58, of Tallahassee, FL, transitioned unexpectedly from this earthly realm to eternity on June 2, 2023 while enjoying one of the things he loved most in life - hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with family. James was born on January 24, 1965 to Jimmie Lee Johnson and Lt. Gilbert L. Johnson, U.S. Navy (deceased) in Oklahoma City, OK.

After graduating from Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach, FL, class of 1982, he moved to Tallahassee, FL to attended Florida State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. He later completed a Master's Degree in Public Administration (MPA) at Wichita State University in Wichita, KS. He spent over twenty-eight years at Florida State University in various roles, most recently as a Strategic Category Manager in MRO/Facilities. He spent every available moment outside of work exploring nature, including hiking, mountaineering, cruising, long-distance cycling, fly-fishing, kayaking, and enjoyed international travel with family and friends.

James was preceded in death by his father Lt. Gilbert L. Johnson, U.S. Navy. He is survived by his mother, Jimmie Lee Johnson; by his younger brother Steven L. Johnson; by his best friend, adored wife, and mother of his three children, Shelia R. Johnson; by his children, Dr. Brandon A. Johnson, Daniel J. Johnson, and Lindsey K. Johnson; and by his niece, Magdalena A. Price. He will also be fondly remembered by his Mother-in-love, Sonja Philpot Lindsey-Moore of Tallahassee, FL; Brother-in-love, Daniel Carlton Lindsey of Tallahassee, FL; Sister-in-love, Teresa Lindsey-Houston (Shaun) of Battle Creek, MI, his grand-dog, Grace, and a host of aunts, uncles, beloved friends, and valued co-workers. He was a member of Restoration Place Tallahassee (Pastor Richard Ledford).

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Florida State University's Dodd Hall at 641 University Way, Tallahassee, FL 32306 @ 1:00p.m. EST.

I remember Mr. James fondly by his unique voice and his professional demeanor. I only got to know him more personally within the last month of his life and heard how fond he was about traveling with his family. He was giving pointers to another coworker who was headed west to ski on the slopes in Colorado. I will continue to hold his contribution to FSU dear. He did so much for so many. May his spirit continue on in our memories.

James and I shared work space when he and I both worked at Leon County Growth and Environmental Management. I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with him. He always had a smile on his face. I'm very saddened to hear about James's passing. I'd known him for most of my life and though we didn't see each other frequently, my memories of him are filled with broad smiles and hearty laughs. Rest in peace, my friend.

We met James and his son while they were camping at Up The Creek campground in Pigeon Forge. We met them when they first came in & setting up their camper. Very nice man. Days later we were walking, we saw him on the ground. I thought he had just passed out. I got water & put on his face & neck. ( I pass out, so that's what helps me is cold water). Rescue squad came & took him. We never thought he would pass away. So sorry for your loss. It was a shock to all of us. Praying for your family.
