James Kiniry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2009.
James Kiniry, 79, of Beechview, entered into eternal life Thursday, March 12, 2009, at UPMC Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Johnstown, son of the late James and Margaret (Suttmiller) Kiniry. Jim was a brilliant teacher and scholar. As a Holy Cross Brother for 17 years he taught mathematics in various schools in the United States and in Rome, Italy. After leaving the Brothers he continued his role as teacher and scholar even while working in various other positions. He had a great love for theology, philosophy, mathematics, science and history and he shared this love with so many others, students and adults, throughout the years. His knowledge and very presence always enlightened and elated the lives of all he knew and met. Jim was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, in Beechview, Pittsburgh. Besides his parents Jim was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Krill; and brother, Monsignor Joseph Kiniry. He is survived by his best friend and kindred spirit, Thomas Irwin, of Pittsburgh; brothers, Brother Richard Kiniry CSC, of Washington, D.C., Michael (Ruth) Kiniry, of Miami, Fla., Monsignor Lawrence Kiniry, of Greensburg, and Thomas (Carol) Kiniry, of Fairfield; and sisters, Marianne, of Johnstown, Sister Bridget Kiniry OP, of New York, N.Y., and Peggy (Raymond) Rafferty, of Johnstown. He is also survived by very dear friends and second family; his dog, Mike, and all the pets that Jim loved and nurtured throughout the years; and Tom's mother, Elma Pierce; sister, Nancy Singer; and brothers, Jack and Bill Irwin; and other nieces and nephews. Friends received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in WILLIAM ECKELS FUNERAL HOME, 1923 Broadway Ave., Beechview, Pittsburgh. Funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Catherine of Siena Church. Interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
