James L. Ashcraft, 86 of Newbern, Tennessee died on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at Tennova Healthcare-Dyersburg Regional in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Born Wednesday, May 21, 1930 in Dyer County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Glynn Ashcraft and the late Dixie Childress Ashcraft. Mr. Ashcraft was a 1948 graduate of Newbern High School and a 1953 graduate of Memphis State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force flying with Strategic Air Command. Mr. Ashcraft was a Newbern business man for over forty years, He served as president of the Newbern Rotary Club, was a member of the Newbern American Legion and worked diligently in acquiring the Newbern Vocational School. He loved gardening for his neighbors and friends and was always there to lend a helping hand. James attended the Newbern Cumberland Presbyterian Church and loved our Lord and Savior and knew he would see Jesus. Funeral services for Mr. Ashcraft will be 3:00 PM on Saturday in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Steve Rogers. Interment will follow in Fair view Cemetery in Newbern, Tennessee. Family will receive visitors after the service in the fellowship hall of the Newbern Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Ora Lee Wood Ashcraft who he married on July, 17, 1954 , of Newbern, Tennessee; one daughter, Lynn Ashcraft Shearer who currently resides in Newbern, Tennessee; one son, Dr. William M. Ashcraft (Carroll) of Kirkwood, Missouri; four grand-daughters, Brennan Shearer of Charlotte, North Carolina, Morgan Shearer of Nashville, Tennessee, Kathleen Ashcraft of Denver, Colorado and Brittany Ashcraft of St. Louis, Missouri; one nephew, John Wood and one niece, Pam Wood plus many loving cousins and friends. Pallbearers will be Mark Lamb, Colin Carpenter, Patrick Cummings, Brian Boucher, David Shirley and Brad Studard. Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert Joe Adams, Danny Carpenter and Elbert Petty. Johnson-Williams Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of James L. Ashcraft.

He always wanted me to play "Victory In Jesus" so every time I went back to Newbern, I would play it just for him! He was one very special man and will be missed by many.
