James Lorenz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2011.
James Douglas Lorenz, M.D. was born August 1, 1943 in Okeene, Oklahoma to Ralph and Bertha Lorenz. He died October 9, 2011 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, California after a five year battle with bladder cancer. Jim grew up in Shattuck, Oklahoma. He was the president of his senior class and Salutatorian at Shattuck High School. He attended both Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska and Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California, graduating from the latter with a degree in physical therapy in 1965. After beginning a career in physical therapy he felt called into medicine. In 1974, he enrolled in medical school at Autonoma Universidad of Guadalajara, Mexico and graduated in 1978. His fifth pathway rotations were at White Memorial Medical Center and he completed his residency in family practice at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. In 1983, he moved to Turlock and joined the Turlock Medical Clinic where he served as department chair for many years. He also served as Chief of Staff for the Emanuel Medical Center in 1994 and 1995. Jim was board certified in family practice and truly loved his job! In 1995, the Turlock Medical Clinic joined Sutter Gould Medical Group where he continued to practice until illness forced him to retire in 2010. Jim was very active in the Denair Bilingual SDA Church and enjoyed teaching, giving Bible studies and leading out in prayer meetings.
He was also a tremendous Yankees fan, fulfilling a longtime dream in 2008 by attending a ballgame at the original Yankees stadium just before demolition began. In storybook fashion, the game was a dramatic Yankee win. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and two strikes, Giambi ended the game with a walk-off home run.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Cindy of Turlock, sons, James (Julie) Lorenz of Pleasant Hill, Michael (Soon-mee) Lorenz of Merced, stepchildren, Cara (Drew) Powers of Redlands, Jeremy (Kristin) Lemos of Modesto and Lindsay Lemos of Loma Linda. He is also survived by six grandchildren, James and Judy Lorenz of Pleasant Hill, Gina and Michael Lorenz of Merced and Jack and Ryan Powers of Redlands. He is also survived by his sister Shirley Lorenz of Irvine and brother Richard Lorenz of Oklahoma City.
Jim is now at peace, sleeping in the assurance of Christ's soon return. The memorial service will be held at Ceres Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday, October 15th at 4:00 p.m. Donations may be made to Turlock Gospel Mission and the Alexander Cohen Hospice House.

Dr Lorenz was a great doctor to my grandparents, my mother, my siblings and myself. It always seemed like a family member we were off to visit more than a doctors appointment. I have thought about him over the years, and just came across his obituary. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful man

I just found out about Jim's passing today from the SDA Recorder. I knew Jim in Guadalajara for the 3 years we were there and during our 5th Pathway program at White Memorial.
I thought of Jim as a mentor and have thought of him often since then. His integrity, gentle leadership and genuine interest in others
was a rarity and truly set an example to others. God's Blessings on his family.

Our sincere condolences to the Lorenz Family. Dr. Lorenz was truly a one of a kind amazing physician. He was our family physician from the time he started at TMC until he retired. He would always take that extra step and make that personal phone call to our home each and every time any of our family members had seen him in the office, always showing such compassion and concern. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers to the Lorenz Family.

Dr. Lorenz was one of the most amazing people and doctors I have ever met. He always treated myself and my family with such wonderful care and concern. We never felt rushed and always took the time to really listen. Dr. Lorenz was truly one of a kind. May God Bless his family during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Dr. Lorenz. Dr.Lorenz was one of the most caring doctor's and we'll miss him terribly, if it hadn't been for him, I don't believe our daughter would have survived toxic shock, he knew she needed to be in Oakland's Children's Hospital and that our local hospital didn't have the capabilities of treating such a sick child, she was 13 at the time, we spent 3 1/2 weeks there while she fought for her life. I remember a subsequent visit with Dr. Lorenz and he said to me, I don't know if you believe in miracles and I said yes I did because I know we had both witnessed a miracle in my daughter coming back from the brink of death.

Know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Jim was truly a wonderful person; so kind, so quiet and never drawing attention to himself. I share with the family the pain of witnessing his struggle and passing but pray for their strength and hope, the hope of eternal life and a reunion in heaven.

October 18, 2011

Jim was one of the nicest guys in our class at Shattuck, Oklahoma class of 61. I'm sorry Jim couldn't attend our 50th class reunion in May but I hope he enjoyed the video we made for him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this most difficult time. Jane Girton Hutchins

Dr. Lorenz was our family physician since 1987 and delivered two of our daughters. What a truly wonderful man he was. He always made us feel as though we were his only patients, and very important. I have found that he made everyone feel that way. God Bless his family during this time. And thank you for allowing us to have such a dedicated physician. He will be missed.

I am so saddened by the death of Dr Lorenz. He was our family Doctor from the time he arrived at TMC until he retired. As so many others have already written he was an amazing man & Dr. He was so good to us when our 19 yo son was killed, he always had such compassion and concern for our well being. I will miss him, until we meet again. May the Lord bless and comfort you, his family, as he has comforted all who knew him.

To Cindy, Cara and Drew, Jeremy and Kristen, and Lindsay,
I was honored to be included in this special day of remembrance of Jim. He definitely was a well loved man and always so kind.
I never heard him complain of having to go through this suffering. I hope you find peace in that memory. He only wanted the best for all of you and I think he gave it to you. He will be missed by all, but I know that he will be missed most by you Cindy. He will always be a part of you.
Remember this also: Time is the only thing that will give you what you need. Cindy and Jim; Your Love was Timeless

I have had the privilege of being a patient of Dr. Lorenz from the time that he started his practice in Turlock until his retirement. Never have I received better care and always with a sense of humor. My condolences to his family. He was the best.

October 14, 2011

My sympathies go out to the Lorenz family. My parents were patients of his from the time he started his practice in Turlock. They always respected his medical expertise, but almost as importantly, they respected his gentle way with them. When my father passed away, he was so caring with my mother. She was so very upset when Dr. Lorenz became ill and she had to see another MD. Her comments were always..."Dr. Lorenz always did it THIS way!". He left such a positive mark on everyone he touched. The world was a better place because of him. Blessing to all of you.
Sincerely,
Sheryl Garcia

To the Lorenz Family my deepest condolences. Dr. Lorenz treated my terminally ill Mother in 1992. She admired him so much. We the family had a meeting in his office regarding our Mother's illness and he cried more than we did. His compassion for his patients knew no bounds. Oh, how Mom looked forward to Dr. Lorenz's friday night house calls. May you rest in peace.
