James M. "Jim" Boland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 25, 2017.

Boland, James M. "Jim," baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the age of 92.

Loving husband for 62 years of the late Mary C. Boland (nee Collins); Jim leaves behind his beloved children Patty (Glen) Bellinger, Eileen (Joseph) Walsh, Michael Boland, Jim (Katie) Boland, Sean (Elise) Boland, and Deirdre (Andrew) Brown; 19 adoring grandchildren; Christopher (Paige), Matthew (Kathleen), Thomas, Elizabeth (Scott) Trampe, Michael and Stephen Bellinger; Katie (Tim) Mehringer, Joey, Brian, Jack and Mary Walsh; Meaghan, Andy, Patrick, Kelly and Danny Boland; Erin, Hannah and AJ Brown. Four great grandchildren Emily, Madeline, Quinn and James Bellinger.

Born on Amsterdam Avenue in New York City, Jim was very proud of his Irish heritage. He and Mary moved their family from College Point, NY to East Northport, NY to Princeton, NJ before settling in Ballwin in1974. They raised their six kids in a house full of love, humor and discipline.

Jim was a WWII veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943 after graduating from high school. Following the war, he went to college, graduating from Syracuse University with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering. His first job out of college was with Western Electric Company where he worked for 32 years until he took early retirement in 1985. In retirement, Jim became involved with the Telephone Pioneers of America retiree group.

Jim and Mary loved to travel, whether it was loading up the six kids into the Ford Country Squire wagon and heading to a cabin in upstate New York or sightseeing the USA and abroad on their frequent Golden Frontier senior tours.

Jim’s other favorite activity and passion was running. His stress relief was 5-10 mile runs. At his prime he was running a 7-minute mile in his 70’s. He enjoyed being a member of the St. Louis Track Club and winning many races in his age groups.

His first love, though, was always his family, especially Mary. She was the joy of his life for 62 years. When God took you Sunday morning, we are certain she said, "Hallelujah, you're home!"

I was a food server in the dining room when I met Jimmy who was living in Memory Care. For quite awhile, he would help the CNA named George bring the dirty dishes down the hall to the kitchen. At the time, I had no idea Jim was an avid runner, but anybody could tell he looked physically fine. And he was quick with a smile, an acknowledgment of your existence. Before his wife moved out of their house to be closer to him, a co-worker of mine had spoken of Mary fondly as one of his teachers. So I had a sense of this amazing couple as if they came from the Garden of Eden booby trapped by landmines. Better yet, they began in New York City and wound up in Ballwin, Missouri. In spite of his humor, humanity and husbandry, I seemed to recall that he rarely got wet in the backyard pool. At least two miracles from what little I know: 62 years of marriage to feistiness and running that fast in his 70s. I did not hear Jimmy talk much or jump for joy yet even with the ALZ, he radiated serenity and outbursts of happiness. Now I did get my ears lit up with Mary's stories about her beloved husband, among other topics. May the peace of God be with their humongous family and fabulous friends! Long live the Bolands because we will never get rid of them anyway. And thank the "Lord of the Dance", THE Irish God, that I and countless others were touched by this grand couple. Geez, I'm a bit surprised they only had six offspring...

I have memories of being at the house that seemed so big with the pool. Being with my Godfather who was fun and kind. Years later as an adult I would be so impressed and inspired by his commitment to running and fitness. And finally, he was palpably present when we all got together in Florida. He planted seeds of family and tradition so long ago that we all enjoy now. A life well lived. Love to all.

Occasionally you meet someone at work who by their kindness and warm friendship makes the days just sail by. Jim was such a coworker.
I'll never forget the kindness he showed me during our daily interactions, our travels to Miami,Chicago, etc. Those were truly the GOOD OL DAYS. It,s time to rest Jim. Rest in peace.
