I am so very sad to hear of the death of Professor Malpas - the man who saved my life. He always showed that he truly cared. A quietly spoken man, a true gentle man. When most of the doctors that I saw were at a loss as to what treatment to use, Professor Malpas found a solution to treat and eventually cure the very rare cancer that I had, I owe my life to this wonderful man and will be forever grateful to him. So, from the bottom of my heart I say THANK YOU Professor Malpas. There is a brighter star in the sky!

I worked as a PA in medical oncology based at Barts in Little Britain in the late 80s-90s (under the guidance of Janine Corner who was Prof Malpas' PA) and was sad to hear of his passing. He was a very kind and gentle man both to patients and staff. Very fond memories of my time in that department, of which Prof Malpas is one of those memories.

Just found out about the passing of prof Malpas. I was a patient on kenton ward from June 1981 onwards and subsequent clinics, through to 1987 when I has a relapse and was transferred to an adult ward. Without his work and that of his team, nurses, cleaners, admin staff I would have perished. Lovely kind, gentle manner in such trying circumstances. The world needs more like Jim Malpas. RIP Prof. ❤

I worked for Professor Malpas as his pa and secretary for a number of years in the medical oncology department in Little Britain at St Bartholomews Hospital in London. He was a delight to work for with great integrity and am very sad to hear of his death. He was a perfect gentleman and he was a pleasure to work for.

We remember Professor Malpas with great fondness. Our son was a patient on Kenton Ward in 1978 aged eleven, He is now 52 and strong and healthy. We shall be forever grateful to the Professor for his kindness, his optimism, the truth, and not least for his treatment, some of which was very new.
We send our condolences to his family and his many friends.

I have only just read about the death of
Professor Malpas and am so very sad. I worked as a paediatric social worker on his unit from 1976 and shall always remember how kind he was to patients and colleagues, and to me personally when I first arrived, taking great trouble to educate me about paediatric oncology and its treatments. The patients loved him and however ill they were they always looked forward to seeing him - I have hundreds of very happy memories and stories about him and his relationship with the children that I could tell and, despite the obvious sadness of the diagnoses of the patients there was always a lot of fun and joy which he encouraged and joined in. I was very privileged to have known him

I am sorry to hear of Jims death, I new him as Prof Malpas,as I was a patient on Kenton Ward.
I had never met a Doctor like him,so calm and gentle with that big smile he was so reassuring this young boy on the ward.
Truely a special man.
My sympathies go out to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim's death, he was a dear friend and since retirement we used to lunch together. He gave me a warm welcome to Kenton Ward at Barts when I arrived from Australia and I used to attend his ward rounds till I settled in. He also was very helpful to me in his role as Dean. I supported his initiative to produce the wonderful development of Kenton ward as an ideal place for child oncological patients. We were both devastated by the decision to close the three paediatric specialities on the site of Barts.
The whole Barts community will mourn his passing.
I send my deepest sympathy to the family.

Jim recruited me to come to Barts in the early 1990s as their first Professor of Paediatric Oncology-he was a wonderful, calm, very knowledgeable and supportive colleague who had a fountain of knowledge and modestly always available to give support and advice. He and Joyce were lovely hosts at their home . As a founding member of the UK Children's Cancer Group he pioneered greater collaboration amongst all of us paediatric oncologists at that time . A very decent and lovely man.
