JAMES NICHOLAS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13, 2019.
NICHOLAS JAMES E. (JIM)

Age 85 of Indiana Twp. passed peacefully on Thursday, January 10, 2019. He was born and raised in Oakmont, PA. He served in Pearl Harbor, HI with the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a Cryptographer from 1956 to 1958 and completed his education in Industrial Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University in 1960. He began his career with PPG Industries in Greensburg, PA where he met his beloved wife Dorothy (Dottie) Yencha Nicholas. In 1964, he returned to Pittsburgh to advance his career working in process and technology engineering for Computer Research, PPG Industries, and Rockwell International. In 1969, he joined Arthur Young & Company as a management consultant before establishing himself as Director of Finance and Administration, ultimately retiring from Ernst & Young in 1991. After retirement, he remained active professionally for five more years in various administrative management positions. Jim enjoyed golf and hunting, but mainly enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly at the beach in Topsail Island, NC. He was a member of the Oakmont Country Club from 1972 to 1996 and a longtime member of the Elks Club. Most of all, he enjoyed being the loving husband of Dottie, from whom he was inseparable. Infamous for his sense of humor, he had a gift for recalling and telling jokes from his memory bank with impeccable delivery. He will be immortalized through the retelling of his catalog of jokes and one-liners by his sons and friends. He was very proud of his sons, Jim (Roberta) Nicholas, Michael (Mary) Nicholas, and Sean (Jennifer) Nicholas, and was the loving grandfather of Molly, Wyatt, Michela, James, Stuart and Sydney Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his sister Dolores Farren and brother Jack Nicholas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 2-6 p.m. at ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC. 378 Maryland Ave, Oakmont, PA 15139. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, Oakmont. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James' name to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 310 Fisk St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201 or online at familyhospicepa.org. UNCLE JIM NICHOLAS

Uncle Jim Nicholas is one of a kind
Sharp in his spirit; sharp in his mind
Hard to imagine a world without him
One of a kind, our Uncle Jim

Not one to dampen any event
More likely to brighten the places he went
Lights around him would not dare to go dim
A glow in this world, our Uncle Jim

Always to me a joy to be near
His spirit will always be one I hold dear
Filling his cup of life to the brim
One of a kind, our Uncle Jim

So long for now I guess is true
But the world will remain abuzz about you
The heavens rejoice with a wondrous hymn
As the Lord welcomes our Uncle Jim!

To Dottie and Jim's family: I can't tell you how sad I am to find Jim here this morning. We were Class of 1951 at Oakmont High School. More
importantly, Jim lived a few doors from my
grandmother and we were childhood playmates even before we went to school. I was in the Nicholas living room when the news of Pearl Harbor came over Ollie's radio. And I remember Jim's experience when the first Sputnik went up: he was put to work with a slide rule doing calculations at Pearl Harbor. Know that my
prayers will be with you as you say your goodbyes.
