James Nixon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2025.
Napa - James C Nixon (Jim) was born December 21, 1947, in Montgomery, AL, and left this realm on October 14, 2025. He was the only child of James Cecil Nixon and Susie Stough.

Early childhood years were spent living on his grandparents' farm. They were both significant influences in his early years and left indelible marks on his character.

At age 12, on Independence Day, July 4, 1960, he became a Christian and was baptized into Christ at the Church of Christ in Highland Home, AL. This occurred during one of the week-long series of "Gospel Meetings" typical of rural churches in the South.

At age 29, Jim left Alabama and moved to San Francsico, CA, where he lived for 32 years and was employed by McKesson Corp for 20 years. In November 2009 he relocated to Palm Springs, CA.

He became a member of Bloom in the Desert, United Church of Christ, on September 30, 2012, after several decades of no organized religious affiliation. Jim sometimes jokes that he put the "United" into his Church of Christ heritage.

As a member of Bloom, Jim served as Treasurer, a member of the Permanence/Facilities team, Fund Development and Social Action/Mission. He was also a zealous participant in Bloom's recycling program - "Dumpster Diving for Jesus" as he sometimes called it.

During his lifetime he was fortunate to witness significant changes in Civil Rights and Gay Rights. From living a closeted life as a gay teenager in the segregated South he witnessed the evolution to greater equal rights for all races and sexual orientations. Jim never married or had siblings but he highly valued his friends, partners and fellow "Bloomers" - all his "Chosen Family".

Jim Nixon was right at the top of my lifelong list of wonderful human beings we met at a spiritual program in the Castro decades ago and stayed spiritually and emotionally connected until his death.

He was a repeat real estate client, a fellow southerner, and I admired his deep spiritual core greatly.

Bottom line for me is that I loved this man so much and he was one of the dearest friends of my entire life. He leaves a big big void.
