James O'Halloran Obituary

Published by Highland Park News from Jan. 24 to Jan. 30, 2013.
O'Halloran Jr., James E. 1938 - 2013 On Monday, January 14, 2013, James Edward "Teddy" O'Halloran Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Onekama, Michigan, surrounded by his wife and children. Mr. O'Halloran had struggled recently with assorted medical issues. Mr. O'Halloran was born in 1938 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of James E. O'Halloran and Georgiana Ross O'Halloran. After serving two years in the U.S. Army in Germany, Mr. O'Halloran graduated from Colgate University in 1962. Mr. O'Halloran played football at both Colgate University and in the Army, where his football team won the U.S. Army European Football Championship in 1958. Mr. O'Halloran went on to earn a law degree summa cum laude from Northwestern University Law School in 1965. After his graduation, Mr. O'Halloran worked at the Chicago law firm of Bell Boyd Lloyd for many years as a trial attorney, litigating business disputes in courthouses across the country. In 1980, Mr. O'Halloran founded his own law firm in Northbrook, Illinois, now known as O'Halloran Kosoff Geitner & Cook, LLC. In 2000, Mr. O'Halloran retired from the active practice of law and moved to Onekama, Michigan, where his lake house was the focus of many family get-togethers and visits from old friends. Never known to stand on ceremony, Mr. O'Halloran skipped his first week of law school to go on a honeymoon with his beloved wife, Verlyn "Lyn" O'Halloran (nee Simmons) of Kenilworth, Illinois. Mr. O'Halloran and Lyn were happily married for fifty years, having celebrated their 50th anniversary this past September with their children and grandchildren. Mr. O'Halloran met Lyn when still a student at Colgate University, but spending his summers working at Wrigley Field on the Cubs' ground crew. Mr. O'Halloran is survived by his wife; his sister, Ann O. Biddle of Jamestown, Rhode Island; his four children, Laura V. Longfellow of Grand Rapids, Michigan, James E. O'Halloran III of Elmhurst, Illinois, Mary R. Miller of Highland Park, Illinois, and Paul B. O'Halloran of Libertyville, Illinois; his sons-in-law, Steven Longfellow and Peter Miller; his daughter-in-law, Lisa O'Halloran; and his grandchildren Neil Longfellow, Steven Longfellow, James E. O'Halloran IV, Cormac O'Halloran, Molly O'Halloran, and Hannah Miller. Mr. O'Halloran will be remembered as a loving and benevolent patriarch, an outstanding attorney and trusted counselor, and as an ardent golfer, gin rummy player, and football fan. More than anything else, however, Mr. O'Halloran will be remembered by his many friends for his smiling, friendly, and fun-loving disposition, his intelligence, his willingness to initiate or participate in any good-natured mischief or shenanigan, and his loyalty, generosity, and kindness to all. Services for Mr. O'Halloran were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lake Forest, Illinois on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lambs Farm, 14245 W. Rockland Rd., Libertyville, IL 60048 (www.lambsfarm.org). Please visit Mr. O'Halloran's personal book of memories page at www.oakgrovefh.com to share memories or photos with his family. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements with Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

I was truly sadden to learn of the passing of Jim O'Halloran. Surely the world is a darker place now that such a bright and glorious light has been taken from us. I can only take comfort in knowing Heaven is a better place now that such a wonderful friend has joined my parents there.
