James Pickering Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 12 to Mar. 13, 2011.
NORTH BERWICK, Maine — James A. "Sonny" Pickering, 71, of Lower Maine Street, passed away Friday, March 11, 2011, surrounded by his family, at the home of his daughter.

He was born July 5, 1939 in Rochester, N.H., the son of Orlando and Elinor (Beals) Pickering. For many years, he worked at the University of New Hampshire as a boiler operator.

Sonny had a great love for the outdoors; he loved hunting, fishing and teaching his daughter and grandchildren to respect and enjoy the land as much as he did. He especially loved exploring the back roads all over Maine, fulfilling his curiosity of where they may lead.

Described as a thrifty wheeler and dealer, Sonny could the turn the smallest of treasures into gold. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Grace (Welch) Pickering of North Berwick; his daughter, Deborah Ouellette and her husband, Randy of Berwick; two stepsons, Lawrence and Eric Ladrie; his brother, Lawrence Pickering and his wife Susan; two sisters, Judy Howard and Linda James; six grandchildren, Robert G. Ouellette, Randy P. Ouellette and his wife Tanya, Nicole Ouellette, Jennifer, Stephanie and Daniel; five great-grandchildren, Blake, Jacob, Cameron, Brady, Carter James.

He will also be missed by his very best friend, Louis Dubois.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 14 from 6-8 p.m., immediately followed by the funeral service at 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. Interment will take place in the spring in Hillside Cemetery in North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute in Sonny's name to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are in the care of the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Online condolences may be sent at www.JohnsonFuneralHomeMe.com.

How does one express someone elses grief? When you see that look of remembrance in his eyes. When you see that quick look of don't catch me and my tears of someone that is very dear and special to me. He will be missed by this man. That thank you for being there might not have been there to have had the time for but was strongly felt. My sympathy for your lost.I can't tell you in enough words how he will be missed by someone here at home.

I only knew Sonny as a customer, first at Borderline and then the Village Market, but I saw him almost daily for years. He always remembered how thrilled I was when my first grandchild was born so he always said "hello grammy" which always made me smile. I trust all the good memories will help you through this difficult time and please know that my thoughts are with you.
