James Royston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 25, 2024.
James Bert Royston, known affectionately as Jim, Dad and Grandpa to his immediate family, and as Uncle Jim or Jimmy to his large extended family, passed away from pulmonary fibrosis on July 23, 2024, at the age of 81 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was also born on January 4, 1943.

Jim grew up on Martin Street in the St. Bernard area of Cincinnati and was a life-long member of St. Clement Catholic parish since his baptism in 1943. He attended St. Clement primary school, followed by Roger Bacon high school, and later graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor's degree in History and a Master's degree in Education. He enjoyed doing research with hundreds of good workmates at Procter and Gamble from 1964 to 1999. He worked hard to make a home for his family in North Avondale from 1971 to 1982 and then in St Bernard from 1982 until his death.

Jim is survived by a loving family, including his wife of 58 years, Mary Jo (Hinterlong) Royston; his son, Thomas James Royston and daughter-in-law Theresa Burkhart; his son, Andrew Bert Royston and daughter-in-law Phuong Chau Royston; his granddaughters, Nina and Chloe Royston, and Arwen Royston. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Maisel and Maureen Wallace.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Angela (Early) Royston; his siblings, Ann Kimes, Thomas Royston (died in infancy), Sr. Eileen Royston O. S. F., and Sr. Carol Royston O. S. F.

Jim will be affectionately remembered by his family for the many summer road and camping trips, covering stops from Florida to Arizona to British Columbia to Ontario to Maine and Alaska. He will be affectionately remembered by his extended family for beach rental vacations in Alabama and the Florida panhandle with his wife's side and at the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his side of the extended family. After retiring, he enjoyed taking trips to England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Spain with Mary Jo.

Jim was an avid golfer, who played nearly every week with his golfing buddies and the P&G league from 1956 to 2023. He was also a dedicated distance runner from 1966 to 2008, completing 33 marathons, including 3 Bostons, and one 50-mile ultramarathon. He ran the first 42 Cincinnati Heart Mini 15k's and many shorter races.

Jim was grateful to all the healthcare workers who cared for him in his life, everyone who ever offered him friendship and encouragement, the many loving friars who lifted his spirits and taught him the real important things in life, and to God for planting him in a loving family with gentle, hard-working parents and five exceptional sisters. Jim had a full life on earth and now is in the next one where peace is everywhere and there are no taxes.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his unwavering integrity, and his generous spirit. In his final act of giving, Jim donated his body to science through the University of Cincinnati Medical School Body Donation program. A visitation will be held on August 3, 2024 at St. Clement Church at 10 am followed by a memorial mass at 11 am. Jim's family asks that any donation in honor of his memory be made to Saint Clement's Parish at https://www.stclementcincinnati.org/.

Jim and Mary Jo lived below my parents at one time. WHen they moved to Avondale Mary jo watched me for some time during the day. Jim in a way helped shape who I became through this. I will always remember that old station wagon he drove forever. rest well James

Jim was a great person and golfer. He was Avon fields golf wizard, he knew every inch of the course. When i just started in the ITC league he was coming down the 13th hole fairway and I ask him about a rock that my ball was close to, I was on the par 3. He said Steve just use your 9 iron with a full swing, so I did pared the hole. Thanks Jim I told him later. He will surely be missed by many Rest in Heaven Jim!

Uncle Jim was such a good man and role model for me as my Godfather. One of my early memories was his taking my brother and I along with Tom camping in Sandusky and adding a visit to Cedar Point. Ironically, I just was camping there this last weekend with my family and attending the park. Thank you, Jim for your love of God, family, and the outdoors. Rest in Peace, Jim.

Jim was a year behind me at Roger Bacon and my basketball teammate. Jim was a team player, selfless then and through his exceptional life. Respected by all and whom I considered my lifelong friend and teammate. Rest with the angels, Jim Royston

My brother, Jim, was such a big part of my life in too many ways to enumerate.
He would say on the phone, "It's your brother". I loved being with him whether at my house or his. He loved the kids especially in the early morning when he would have one on his lap to give some extra sleep time to us, the parents.
I will miss him so much as a truly present part of my life. Thanks, Jim, for everything. Love to MaryJo, Andy, and Tom as we say good bye one last time to you, Jim. Maureen

Jim was a great friend. My most vivid memory was running alongside him, step for step, for about 3/4 of the inaugural Flying Pig Marathon. I took a quick break, and never caught up to him again. As in life, Jim kept a steady, nothing bothered him pace. His kind are not to be seen again anytime soon.
My prayers and sincere condolences to the family.
He will not be forgotten.

My best childhood friend, Andy, lost his father. The number of times I was at his house after school or rides home from caddying together or seeing his dad working in their garden while we played in the backyard are all great memories. Mr. Royston helped Andy and I build a birdhouse when we were kids, which when we were prepping for my wedding at his house, it still hung in their backyard. He took me on my first run around St. Bernard. It was a full circle moment when we ran into each other at a Thanksgiving Day 10k in downtown after I picked up running more seriously as an adult. When I got in to also work at P&G, Mr. Royston was one of the first I knew I wanted to tell. He truly was one of those gentle souls. Now, he is at peace.

To my friend...and his family:

In Times of Loss...
We pray that in this time of loss,
You'll feel God's love much more
And that you'll find your comfort
In the presence of the Lord
We pray God pours upon you,
His sweet amazing grace
And overflow your heart with peace
As you live in His embrace.

Every corner of my memories include Uncle Jim and Aunt MaryJo. I will forever love the quiet, thoughtful presence he brought to our family. I hear the whistle he used to signal his boys. I feel the warm and cozy home he and Mary Jo opened up to us at Christmas that always felt full of magic. And I cherish the visits he made to Alaska and Idaho. And when our dad died, I will be forever grateful for the care and calm uncle Jim brought to Maudy. Mary Jo, Tom and Andy, I love you and am so lucky to have had an Uncle like Uncle Jim. Susan

Jim´s first set of golf clubs included a spoon and niblick with bamboo shafts. "Friends are like angels following you through life" Jim was a true friend.

I was lucky enough to be considered part of his "extended family", and enjoy a wonderful time with Jim and the gang, on an Outer Banks vacation. Additionally, I was welcomed by Jim and Mary Jo, to stay in their beautiful home, during my visits to the Royston family, in Cincinnati. Their friendship and generosity will always have a very special place in my heart. Rest in peace, Jim.
