James Seitz Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 31 to Aug. 2, 2023.
James R. Seitz, Jr., affectionately known to all his friends as Jimmy, passed away on July 19, 2023, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, leaving behind a legacy of art, culture, and cherished memories. Born on June 14, 1935, he was the only child of Newcomb Gladney Seitz and J. R. Seitz. His life was filled with passion, adventure, and a genuine love for the arts.

Growing up in Wichita Falls, Texas, Jimmy developed a deep connection with nature, fostered through fly fishing and bird hunting alongside his father. He attended Phillips Andover Academy and later graduated from Yale University, which opened the door to a world of opportunities and exploration.

After completing his studies, Jimmy embarked on a memorable tour of Europe, enriching his appreciation for diverse cultures and art. A true globetrotter, Jimmy traversed the world, discovering new wonders and experiences in distant lands.

Jimmy's fascination with beauty and craftsmanship led him to establish two successful stores, The Pavillion, in Dallas and Wichita Falls, specializing in fine silver, objects, and tabletop items for homes. A man with a big heart, Jimmy was not only dedicated to his business but also to supporting the arts.

His love for the visual and theater arts was unparalleled, and he found joy in attending countless Broadway shows and operas during his travels.

Jimmy also had a love for thoroughbred horse racing which was another significant aspect of his early life. He avidly attended races at Del Mar and Santa Anita and even owned racehorses, taking delight in the excitement of the sport.

Santa Fe held a special place in Jimmy's heart. Having visited the city with his parents during the 1940s at Bishops Lodge, he later split his time between Wichita Falls, Dallas, and Santa Fe. He immersed himself in the local arts scene, becoming a fixture at art openings, opera events, and chamber music performances. Jimmy's passion for opera was particularly remarkable, and he dedicated himself as a supporter and board member of both the Santa Fe Opera and Dallas Opera, where he delighted in the performances that touched the souls of so many. His passion for the arts showcased his appreciation for beauty and expression.

In the 1980s, Jimmy designed a showcase home which demonstrated his architectural talents and captured Santa Fe's scenic beauty. In Santa Fe, he found solace and inspiration, surrounded by a community that mirrored his passion for culture. In 2022, Jimmy decided to make Santa Fe, New Mexico, his permanent home.

Not only a patron of the arts, Jimmy was also a consummate entertainer. His beautiful home on museum hill, personally designed from the doors to the floors, became a hub for welcoming friends and guests from around the world. His warm smile and larger-than-life personality made everyone feel at ease and cherished.

In his departure, Jimmy leaves behind a multitude of friends, colleagues, and admirers who will forever cherish the moments they shared with him. He was a person of immense kindness, generosity, and elegance, and his contributions to the world of arts and culture will be cherished for generations to come. Jimmy will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Santa Fe Opera on September 15, 2023 to honor his remarkable journey and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Jimmy will be remembered as a loving son, a loyal friend, and a dedicated supporter of the arts and charitable causes.

Donations may be made to the Dallas Opera or the Santa Fe Opera in honor of Jimmy's memory.

We are very saddened to hear of Mr. Jimmy Seitz's passing. He was a regular guest at Adelmo's in Dallas, and more important, he was a part of our lives over the years. We will miss you, Sir. Rest in peace, and we will cherish the memories.

Jimmy always will have a place in our hearts. It was he, in fact, who introduced me to my spouse, Lawrence, some 46 years ago!

And assuredly, Jimmy has great "digs" where he has now gone: after all, a favorite saying of his was "I always buy what pleases me." Prost!, Jimmy!
