James Spivey Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2024.
James "Jim" Webster Spivey Jr. of Lago Vista, Texas entered eternal life on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, with his loving wife Bunmi by his side. He was 70.

Jim was born in Philadelphia's Northeast Hospital on Monday, July 12, 1954 to Elaine (nee Zimmerman) and James Webster Spivey, Sr. He grew up in the City of Brotherly Love and attended Lincoln High School in the city's Northeast, graduating third in a senior class of approximately 800 students and excelling as the three-year starting quarterback for the varsity football team, resulting in his induction into the city's High School Football Hall of Fame in 1971.

Jim went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Ursinus College of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, making him the first person from either side of his family to graduate from an institution of higher learning. He then went on to earn an MBA from Rider University in Lawrence Township, New Jersey, before embarking on a career in the world of corporate management.

During the 1980s and into the 1990s, Jim worked in various capacities for Johnson & Johnson, Wang Laboratories, and Oracle, Inc. before becoming CEO of Synercom Technology in Houston, Texas. Shortly thereafter, he experienced what he would later describe as an "awakening" that changed the course of the remainder of his career - not unlike the one depicted as impacting the titular protagonist of one of his favorite movies, Jerry Maguire.

At this point, Jim began his work in personal and executive coaching, which would become a lifelong passion. He first launched his own company, Revolution Consulting, in 1998 before joining Mazzi Partners in Spring, Texas in 2015. Last year he formed Walk with Jim Jr., named to honor his father, and worked in that capacity for the last year of his life. In doing so, he committed to helping others experience a fuller, richer life by embarking on a journey into grace, gratitude, and unconditional love - something only possible by letting go of personal identity, preferences, and prejudices.

Jim described the work as his life's purpose, and where he felt freest.

Jim's favorite television show was the 2020 sitcom Ted Lasso, and his favorite movie was the 1999 sci-fi classic The Matrix - he kept a running count of how many times he had seen the latter, ultimately reaching more than 60. His favorite song was the 1970 Van Morrison track Into the Mystic. All three shared the same themes of his life and career, expounding on the value of evolving as a person, friend, and leader.

Jim's favorite thing in the world to wake up to, aside from those he loved, was the smell of bacon and eggs. In the same vein, two restaurants in particular held a special place in his heart, as locales in which to better connect to his children: Romano's Pizza on West Gray Street in Houston and Jim's Steaks on South Street in Philadelphia.

Jim was also an unflinchingly loyal fan of Philadelphia professional sports, including the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers, through their several deeply memorable highs and far many more deeply forgettable lows of the last seven decades.

Jim was predeceased by his father, James.

He is survived by his wife, Bunmi; his mother, Elaine; four children, Jim of Readington, New Jersey, Mark of Aberdeen, New Jersey, and Jake and Heather of Houston, Texas (as well as Jim's wife Elizabeth, nee Fiore, and Mark's wife Amy, nee Stodolak); three grandchildren, Jim and Elizabeth's Margery, Nicholas, and Mark; three siblings, Nancy Rush of Warrington, Pennsylvania, David Spivey of Holland, Pennsylvania, and Diane Zajdel of Yardley, Pennsylvania; along with innumerable friends, extended family, and loved ones.

Jim's entire family would like to extend its sincerest and deepest thanks to the entire staff at Gilead Home Health and Hospice in Round Rock, Texas, who provided Jim with outstanding care leading up to his transition into eternal life.

A celebration of life for Jim is expected to be held in early 2025. Details will be shared as they become available.

Jim was a great man. He lived life to the fullest, literally loved others to life and got me closer to my family and community than I´ve ever been. You will be missed, my brother. I love you deeply and will miss your hugs

Jim started out as my life coach/spiritual mentor and eventually became one of my dearest friends (also marrying my dearest friend, Bunmi). He was the tangible, unconditional love of God to me, and he helped me discover my true essence and life's purpose. If it wasn't for his unconditional love, I would not have been open to meeting and marrying the love of my life. Jim, it was such an honor walking with you. My life is a direct testament to yours. I will love you forever, friend.

Although I had lost touch several years ago, I have many great memories from long ago as roommates for 2 years and friends for more years after college. God bless you and rest in peace!
