James Staples Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 7, 2010.
BUTTE - James Shields Staples, MD, 49, of Butte, an anesthesiologist and former Great Falls physician, died of natural causes Sunday in Butte.
A visitation/wake is 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a vigil at 7 p.m., at Duggan-Dolan Funeral Home in Butte. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church in Butte.
Jim was born Jan. 4, 1961, at St. James Hospital in Butte, to Jane (Shields) Staples and the late Dr. Daniel "Ned" Staples, both Butte natives.
Jim attended the Immaculate Conception (North Central) and McKinley primary schools. At age 10, after winning many state and regional competitions, he was the youngest certified "expert" skier in the Northern Division of the U.S. Ski Association. He also won city and state tennis titles.
Jim graduated Butte Central High School in 1979, where he was senior class president, played quarterback for the Maroons, was in the casts of school musicals "South Pacific" and "Guys and Dolls," was elected to Boys' State, and was a National Merit Scholar. At Montana Boys' State, he was elected Montana's representative to Boys' Nation in Washington, D.C.
Jim won an appointment to the Military Academy at West Point, but chose instead to attend Carroll College to follow in the medical footsteps of his father and grandfather, both surgeons. Jim was elected student body president at Carroll and chosen by his classmates as their graduation speaker.
He attended medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle; then did his internships and residency in anesthesiology at the Oregon Health Sciences Institute in Portland, where he gained national recognition for his research in pain management.
Jim married Gail Havery, a classmate from Carroll College, during medical school and, upon achieving his board certification in anesthesiology, Jim and Gail moved to Great Falls, where Jim undertook his professional career, and Riley James Staples, their son, was born in 1999.
Jim loved playing golf and tennis, skiing and watching all sports, particularly the Maroons, the Saints, the Washington Huskies, the Griz and the New York Jets. He loved his friends, travel, convertibles, music (sometimes the louder the better), paddling in his pool, his patients, and his profession, but most of all he loved his Catholic faith, his family and especially his son, Riley, who was without exaggeration the light of his life.
Jim is survived by his son, Riley, and Gail Staples; his mother, Jane Staples; his sister, Sally Staples and her son Nick; his brothers Dan, Steve and Tom (Laurel) and their children Jack, Sean and Madeline, and Mark (Kimberly) and their children Lance and Desiree.
Jim was a uniquely well-rounded person. He was smart, studious, disciplined, professional and accomplished. In his prime, he was superbly athletic. He was also spontaneous, creative, thoughtful, generous, kind, loyal, major-league funny, loving and lovable. Jim was a man rich in all but years, and his family and friends were in turn immeasurably enriched by his sparkling life.
The family requests that any memorials in Jim's name be sent to: Dr. James Staples Memorial Education Fund, c/o P.O. Box 1018, Helena, MT 59624-1018.

Dear Gail, Riley and Family
Jim was a favorite of mine. His memory has stuck with me all these years. Being a dentist working in the department, Jim could not resist; Doug, learning anesthesia is like pulling teeth, by the time we are done, we will both be good at it. I was never sure what that meant, but I still laugh about it today. The full measure and value of a pearl is seen in the brightest of sunshine, and Jim always brought sunshine to everyone. I wish medical science was able to do the same for JIm.
God Bless

Dear Gail and Riley
I was very sad to hear of Jim's death.Of all the residents that I helped train, Jim was in many ways my favorite. Besides being a great anesthesiologist, he was a very funny person. The memories of his years in training are some of the most enjoyable of my life. His strugles with severe chronic pain point out a severe health problem that modern medicine is still unable to really manage. Riley, your dad was a great guy. I'm honored to have known him and the OHSU anesthesiology program is proud to have had him as an alumnus.

Dr Staples was a great guy and it was my pleasure to work with him as well as be cared for as a patient of his. When Riley came along he was absolutely over the moon, so heartwarming to see. We had a shared passion for the same music which came in handy when requesting music for one of my concious sedation surgeries. He always made me smile and it made me feel good when he told me that I "got" him, because not everyone did. That was their loss. No more suffering, God Speed

Dear Staples family, I am just in shock tonight over hearing about Jimmy. For the past ten years, it has been my privilege to work for your family up at the lake and I have great memories of all the stories that Jim and Jane had to tell. The thing I remember most though was how Jimmy loved talking about his family and especially Riley. Flathead won't be the same without him. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Peggy Rowe

Dear Gail and family, we will all miss Jim. We worked together for many years on countless cases. He was a skilled and caring doctor. Often tense moments were resolved by his skill and then to further get past a tense moments his humor. Our duets together in the OR he called Two White Guys that Don't KNow the Words do Greatest Hits. Our ever popular The Chickens do Christmas Carols an annual hit in the OR. My memories of him will never fade, WE can be assured that he is entertaining the folks in Heaven with his story telling. May the peace of our Lord find you in this sad time. chris and sue conner

I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I was a classmate of his and he had a gift of keeping the mood light even when we were working hard and were trying to make what felt like very big decisions. He was always there with a joke, a song or a ride home when needed.

Gail and Riley,
Dr. Staples was my anesthesiologist in Great Falls when I had foot surgery ..he was so funny I requested only him for the second foot surgery. He made me laugh even before the "drugs" took affect. I am sorry that he is gone. He was a wonderful physician. My thoughts and prayers are with you both and your family.

Gail and Riley:
I worked with Jim in the operating room at Benefis and what a time we would have. Jim was quite the comedian and could make a tense situtation turn smooth in a matter of minutes. He was so very good at what he did and it was an honor to work with him. I remember when you were born Riley and how proud your father was just remember he is always watching out for you. Hey Jim wherever you are heres to the saying "the roast is done you are finished" still dont use the words in the right cannotation. You will be greatly missed and we will look forward to seeing you in that convertable with the loud music when we get there however we will need a ride. Your time on earth was short but we know that when it is our time you will be waiting wanting to know what took us so long. Look forward to the day when we meet again dear friend!!!

Reading today's notice of Jim's passing was a huge shock to us. It was just a couple of month's ago I ran into him in a parking lot, Aerosmith playing loudly, and as always he had a funny story for us. He was the master of making us laugh. I worked for him while he was practicing in Great Falls, and continued work for him even after he'd moved back to Butte.

May his "too loud for conditions" traffic ticket remain framed at Good Vibrations, and his stories of Festus the Turkey be forever told over and over again. Losing Jim so early in his life is a true injustice to his friends and family. Riley, I hope you will always know what you meant to your dad. You were his whole world!

With deepest sympathies,
Crystal & Rowdy Gillen

Please accept our deepest and heart felt condolences about Jim's death.

Unfortunately, we only knew Jim for a short time. During that time, however, we developed a deep admiration for Jim's undaunted courage and grace while under extreme, unrelenting pain. Despite tremendous physical infirmities, Jim never once lost his wonderful sense of humor. He was a great human being and will be greatly missed.

Jim's in God's hands now and will be remembered in our prayers. Our thoughts and prayers are also with Jim's friends and family.

I was very saddened to hear of Dr. Staples' passing. I didn't know him, but he was the anesthesiologist during a surgery I had. I have had several surgeries in my life and honestly, I couldn't tell you anything about anyone who was there, but Dr. Staples was so funny. I will always remember him. The world lost some sunshine.

Riley and family: I am so sorry for your loss. Jim was an amazing human being and ALWAYS laughed about life no matter how bad it would be. I had the pleasure of working with him, and even though the work aspect of it all was less that stellar, Jim found a way to make everyone laugh and have a good time. I know Jim will have the last laugh and always keep his memories alive. Riley, your dad loved you unconditionally and talked about you all the time. He was sure proud of you buddy.

Gail & Riley: I was so shocked & saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I used to work for him at the Anesthesia Office (Boyd Foster's) in Gt Falls. He was awesome and will be greatly missed. I will never forget his very witty sense of humor and his love of bantor about musical trivia & classic rock bands. I just found a card he had given me when my mom passed away (June '98) and in it were pics of you guys & Riley. Take care, you are in my thoughts & prayers.
