James Strutt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2008.
STRUTT, James William F.R.A.I.C., O.A.A. (Ret), O.A.Q. (Ret), R.C.A., B. Arch. R.C.A.F. 1st Pilot Officer 1942-1945 January 8, 1924 - November 8, 2008 James William Strutt (Jim) passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 8, 2008. Loving husband of the late Audrey Elizabeth Strutt (nee Lett); Beloved father of Lesley Strutt, David Strutt (Anna), Katherine Meredith (David) and Jocelyn Tronsgard (Ken); Beloved brother of Esther Waring; Grandfather of Shannon Butters, Deidre Butters, James Meredith and Nicholas Strutt; Brother-in-law of William Pittman Lett III (Pat). He is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. Jim will be remembered for his integrity, enthusiasm for life, generosity of spirit, insatiable curiosity, joy of discovery, insightful guidance and inspirational teaching, as well as by his magnificent legacy of architectural works. A graduate of Ottawa Technical HS (1942), he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, becoming a pilot and serving his country through to the end of the war. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree at University of Toronto (1950). Jim was Chairman of the Ottawa Chapter of the Ontario Association of Architects, elected as President of the OAA in 1959, and served in various roles at the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) including Vice-President, Registrar and Dean of the College of Fellows. Jim was a most prolific producer of 'Modern Canadian Architecture'. His praxis, influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller evolved into a very distinct reflection of the man, his time and place. His Uplands Airport Terminal (Ottawa) was one of the first post-war buildings to combine art and architecture, incorporating the work of Louis Archambault, and he incorporated the work of sculptor Eleanor Milne into the Canadian Nurses Association Headquarters. For the Canadian Centennial, Expo'67, he was selected to design Plaza de las Americas. His residential explorations in hyperbolic paraboloid construction are often reviewed. Many of his buildings have won awards and several are now designated heritage. From 1969-1986, James taught many of today's practitioners and educators, becoming the Director of the School of Architecture, at Carleton University, in 1977. He continued to mentor students and Interns until recently. Jim felt strongly that the practice of architecture is creative and a good practitioner constantly evolves. To quote him, "Creativity is the expression of self which is generative". He was at the forefront of his profession and the bulk of his life's work (over 5,000 drawings) now forms part of the permanent collection of the Library and Archives of Canada. A huge thank you to Dr. B. Zanke, for his thoughtful guidance and treatment of James over many years and to the Colonel By Residence staff, Care Matters, General Hospital staff and the Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care team who attended his every need with such great care and giving during his final days. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. A memorial service in James' honour will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 420 Sparks Street, Ottawa, on Monday December 1st at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the James W. Strutt Memorial Fund at Carleton University, Attn: E. DiSabato, 510 Robertson Hall, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1S 5B6, or at www.carleton.ca/giving , would be appreciated. Please make cheques payable to Carleton University with memo to the J.W. Strutt Memorial Fund.

Word's cannot express all that Jim means to me.

Jim accepted me into his office in 1965. He welcomed me and my family's move to Ottawa and made me feel like I had always known him. I was very aware of his great works from all the publicity. Due to his interest in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, I sought work with him alone.
I've often thought of him over the years since he chose to teach at Carleton University and of all that he taught me.

Jim and Audrey always included us, along with many others, in some of the greatest evenings and occassions at ‘'Shawano'‘, Bergers, and alone with him at the Canadian Club in the latter days of his practice in our most unique office. With Jim you were never just another person, he drew us all in like a magnet.

One of my fondest memories was upon telling Jim of my plans for our proposed house.
He suddenly decided we needed to go to lunch where.....he proceeded to design the whole thing on a napkin, plan-elevations and detail.

When he closed the office we walked out together, just Jim and me, his last employee. The honour was mine.

Sincere condolences to all the family.

I am saddened by the loss of a gifted teacher and role model during my passage through the architecture program. I remember his encouraging support when I was fortunate to have Jim for one of my studios.
My sincerest condolences to his family. It is a loss for us all.

You taught me so much, Jim. Your wonderful way of seeing space and form changed how I saw the world. The world is a richer place for your sojourn in it.

I am shocked & feel deep sorrow at the news of the loss of a "Gentle Giant"; who personally helped & guided me for my move to Carleton U during 1973-74. I pray to the All Mighty for the blessings on his soul & to give strength to his family to bear this great loss.

Jim,

You have always been such a bright light in our minds and hearts. A great architect, teacher and mentor, you accomplished so much in a life that travelled through so many uncharted territories. You touched all of us who knew you with that wonderful mix of adventure, enthusiasm, friendship and style. Never a dull moment!

Our thoughts are with you as you continue your travels into the universe, no doubt in a spirited dialogue with Audrey. Jim, thanks for the memories.

Our warmest sympathies to all the family.

To family and friends, kindess, courage and prayers.

In 1975 Jim accepted me in to the School of Architecture without math credentials. There has since never been a dull day in my career in Architecture. Thank you Jim, for a wonderful life.

Leslie, David, Kathy, Josse, Esther and your families, my loving thoughts to you at this sad time as you and your friends farewell Jim, an iconic architect, a human being of goodness, grace, fun, laughter and sincerity passes out of our life.
Jim, a dear friend along with Audrey, their loving family welcomed us to Canada and introduced us to the Canadian way of life, which was life forming, and will remain with me forever.
Jim's spirit will always be with me as I remember the fun filled years in Ottawa from 1970-1976 when we worked together at Carleton Uni School of Architecture, danced after many sumptuous dinners, in your home in the Gatineau Hills. The visits to Perth in Western Australia were so memorable as you Jim wove your magic where ever you went.
I will miss your beautiful spirit always.
Love to you Jim as you pass to the next journey and remember, you made a difference and will always be remembered.
With treasured memories from your loving friend,
Louise Howden-Smith (ne Hegvold)

Although I hadn't seen Jim for ages (my job in External meant I was away from Canada a lot) , after I 1st. came to Ottawa and until the late 70's we were friends despite the age gap - I remember many happy (and some rather bizarre!) evenings at their cottage above Aylmer.
My sympathies to the family,
Ron R

I am honoured to have had Jim as a prof. You were missed at our 40th. just a short two weeks ago. There was so much more and in retrospect, so little time.

God speed Jim

As one of your architecture students, I remember the first day I met you in 1968 - you were smoking a cigar, handsome, talking about hyper-parabolic roof design and bigger than life. Though it was through architecture that I knew you, it was your role as a Spitfire pilot that I will always remember you for.

Leslie, David, Kathy, Josse and Esther. To quote Jimmy, "Quite right darling  it was quite the situation ....."  Jimmy was a wonderful friend,  an amazing story teller and fantastic cook.   I will forever treasure in my mind my last visit with him at the Residence where we laughed and giggled and I ate a delicious peach from his fruitbowl.  Always a gentleman and a gentle man who will live on forever in my heart.  My sincere condolences to the family on his passing. I know that he has found inner peace and that he is with his beloved Audrey at God's buffet table fully engaged in their bantering conversation!
