James 'Jim' Sullivan, born January 20, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, in Libertyville, Illinois, at the age of 91. A man of warmth, wit, and endless curiosity, Jim lived a life rich with love, laughter, and purpose.
Raised in Chicago's vibrant Old Town neighborhood, Jim attended Franklin School before graduating from Waller High School in Lincoln Park. There, he distinguished himself not only as a student but as a leader and athlete-serving as quarterback and captain of the football team while also playing baseball and basketball. He was active in the chess club, German club, and student government, laying the foundation for a lifetime of intellectual engagement.
Following high school, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Station and later in Bainbridge, Maryland, eventually serving in Guam. Jim took great pride in his military service and often reflected on those years with deep respect and gratitude.
After returning home, Jim built a life filled with joy and meaning. In 1956, he married Barbara Galluzzo, and together they raised a family that became his greatest source of pride. Though Barbara preceded him in death by a few months, their bond remained ever-present in his heart. He called Barbara the 'love of his life' as they would watch movies holding hands. The letters they wrote each other during Jim's naval deployment are cherished family treasures. Their song was 'Our Love is Here to Stay,' and indeed it was.
Jim is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Maribeth & Brian (Mordini), Kathryn & the late Stefano (Alvera), Laurie & Devin (Heinz), Jamie & Tim (Phillips); and by his cherished grandchildren: Abby, Lucas, and Samantha. His legacy lives on through them-in their laughter, their stories, and their shared memories. He was proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and attended dance recitals, sporting events and graduations with great enthusiasm and happiness.
He also joins in eternal rest his parents Harry and Violet (Sprandel) Sullivan; his brothers Jerry, Robert, William; his sister Patricia and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Gloria (the late George) Shlaes, Carlotta (Wayne) Daniels and Millie (the late Jerry) Sullivan and several nieces.
Jim had an infectious zest for life. He was known for always having a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye, and a pun at the ready. His sense of humor never wavered-even as he faced numerous medical challenges with courage and grace. He often said he was "91 and still having fun," a motto that perfectly captured his spirit.
Fiercely competitive and a lifelong lover of games and challenges, Jim was an accomplished chess player ranked as a very high A / Master by the Chicago Chess League. One of his proudest moments came when he held chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer to a draw during a simultaneous exhibition-a testament to both his skill and tenacity.
A commercial & residential real estate broker by trade, Jim's passions extended far beyond the chessboard. He was an avid golfer who participated in many leagues over the years. He cultivated an impressive garden during his time in Buffalo Grove and enjoyed countless hours bowling, playing poker, bridge and bocce with friends and neighbors in Huntley. Whether discussing current events or deep space exploration, reciting the Gettysburg Address or belting out 'Oh, What a Beautiful Morning' from Oklahoma, Jim brought energy and insight to every conversation. He was know to love crossword puzzles and anagrams and had an encyclopedic knowledge of Chicago history and an appreciation for architecture, paintings and decorative objets d'art.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025. Pre-mass visitation begins at 9:45 a.m. and funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, located at 121 E. Maple Avenue in Libertyville, Illinois (60048). After the service, family and friends are invited to gather to honor a remarkable life well-lived. Details of the celebration of life will be shared at the mass. May Jim's memory be a blessing to all who knew him-and may his song continue to echo in our hearts forever.
Eternal rest, grant upon them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
