Dear JD,
Thank you for coming into mine and Jill's lives, when we needed a father. I remember how you lovingly took care of us, watched over us, and made sure we were provided for.
I remember when you took me to Nieman Marcus in Houston, to buy my Junior Prom dress, & how special I felt, just the two of us. I remember you flying your plane to Austin, when I was in high school, to pick me up, when I was too sick and feverish to drive to Port Arthur for Thanksgiving, and then staying up all night, taking care of me, making sure I was taking my medicine, and giving me fluids to keep the burning fever down. I remember you flying your plane to Corpus Christi, during my high school senior trip, with an excuse about a “conference” you had to attend. It meant a lot to me, that you came, because you cared about me and my safety, and you just wanted to make sure I was ok.
I remember how you helped me decide which Nursing school to attend. You went with me to explore each program, UT/Austin, and Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing. You thought I would receive a better education at Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing. I have never regretted that decision; it helped me to become the nurse I am today. You helped to teach me compassion and kindness for patients, and gave me a thirst for knowledge. You were always so patient and kind to me, teaching me life’s lessons, which I know were hard for you to teach me, at times. We talked and laughed about this for many years after. I remember how happy you were when you bought “The Ranch” in San Marcos, after I started college in 1973, how you loved the land and the animals-- the deer, raccoons, birds, and the herd of wild turkeys. I remember how much fun you had on the bulldozer, clearing the land for the house, and then, the swimming pool, so the grandkids would have a place to swim. You even bought some horses for us to ride, Pancho and Midnight.
I remember how proud you were, walking me down the aisle at my wedding to Jeff. I love you for being such a great father in law and such a great friend to Jeff; how you’ll would talk for hours, and how excited you’ll would get at the beginning of each new season; ready to watch the UT Longhorns (Hook ‘Em), the Cowboys and of course, the Spurs. I know how excited he was to go to the games with you, and, I remember how thrilled he was, to go with you, to the Whitaker vs. Chavez fight here in San Antonio, at the new Alamodome in 1993.
I remember how you flew Mother to Corpus, when I was in labor with Joel. You said you knew it was time to leave when she started putting the clean clothes from the dryer, back into the washing machine, just to have something to do, and not be worried about me and the new baby.
I love how you loved your grandsons so much, Joel, Austin, Dillon, James, and Jack. “The Wild Animals,” as you so lovingly called them. They loved to hear your stories, you instilled in them a curiosity to learn, influenced them to learn, and to be better men. I remember how excited you were to take Joel on vacation with you and Mother, when he was only 3 years old to Brackettville. He was so excited to be off on an “adventure,” driving off with MiMi and Doc.
There are so many memories, the Thanksgivings, where you would say the most gracious blessings, the ski trips, the weekends we used to spend at “The Ranch,” eating Mother’s great cooking, and watching the games, or the Western movies you so loved
I’m so grateful that we were able to get you home from the hospital, where you could go on your next “trip” with dignity, without fear or pain, surrounded by the 3 girls who loved you so much. Most of all, thank you for loving Mother, and being her true soul-mate and for loving me, Jill, and our families. I will always miss you, but, am so grateful that you were such a big part of my life.
Love always,
Pam

Dr. J.D...what a great guy! He was my family doctor for years. I remember when his daughters, Jan and Joan, worked at the clinic. Did either one of them go into medicine? My prayers go out to his children and family.

I was sorry to hear about Dr. Thompson's death. He was my doctor for many years and we lived in the same neighborhood with his wonderful family. I have lost contact with his children so please pass along my prayers to his children, Kay, Jan, Joan and Jim. I know they have a hold in their hearts. He was so proud of them.
