JAMES TOWNSEND Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 14 to Jun. 15, 2011.
TOWNSEND BROTHER JAMES, OFM CAP
Died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Vincentian Home. He was 84, Brother James was born to Patrick and Catherine (Hawkne) Townsend on January 27, 1927, in Bristol, PA. He is survived by his brother Robert Townsend who lives in Middleburg, Florida. The story of Brother Jim's life is told in the biography The Prisoner, an invitation to Hope, written in 2005 by Rev. Paul F. Everett. To know Brother Jim is to know his story of redemption, Later in life Brother Jim was well known for his ministry to prisoners, having been incarcerated himself from 1947 until 1967 at Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh, PA, and Rockview State Correctional institution in Bellefonte, PA. Shortly after his arrival at Rockview in 1961, James became acquainted with the prison chaplain, Fr. Richard Walsh, and a friendship developed that would change the prisoner's life. While in the latter years of his own imprisonment, James underwent a dramatic conversion, which eventually led to his entering the Capuchin Order several years after his release from prison in 1967. Instrumental in his vocational discernment was Capuchin friar, Father Lester Knoll. He encouraged James to become a friar and remained a friend and mentor for the rest of Brother Jim's life. James was invested in the Capuchin habit on February 6, 1972, at St. Conrad Friary in Annapolis, MD. Exactly one year later he made his first vows. Brother Jim's first assignment was as maintenance helper at the Capuchin seminary in Herman, Pennsylvania. On February 9, 1976, Brother Jim made his perpetual profession of vows as a Capuchin friar. Subsequently, he performed fraternal service at the novitiate in Annapolis, at St. Paul's Friary in Cleveland, OH, at St. Conrad Friary in Allison Park, PA, and at Capuchin College in Washington, DC. In 1989 Brother Jim became a founding member of the Capuchin Hermitage in Herman, PA, along with Father Lester and Father Cyrus Gallagher, Later the Hermitage moved to Wheeling, VW, where he remained until he returned to fraternal service in Herman, PA, in 2001. Brother Jim was much loved at St. Mary Parish in Herman. Throughout his life as a friar, Brother Jim often traveled to prisons to speak of his conversion and to give courage and hope to the incarcerated. He returned to Rockview frequently and touched many lives there. Brother Jim was appreciated by both inmates and staff. In 2005, Brother Jim was assigned to St. Augustine Friary in Pittsburgh. Deteriorating health required more intensive care at Vincentian Home in January of this year. He enjoyed and was grateful for the kindness and attention he received from the staff at Vincentian. Visitation and viewing will be on Tuesday, June 14, 2011. from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9p.m. at St. Augustine Friary (221 36th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201). A wake service will be conducted at 8 p.m. The body will be transferred to St. Mary Church in Herman, PA, on Wednesday morning, June 15, 2011. Viewing and visitation will held from 10 a.m. until the funeral. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church at 11 a.m., with interment in the parish cemetery. The Lord is kind and merciful! Fr. Joseph talked about Brother Jim in his sermon today on EWTN and, besides myself, I know many were inspired today. There is hope for all of us. Brother Jim, Requiescat in pace!

Deepest sympathies to all Brother Jim's family and friends.

In early 2006, I clipped a newspaper article telling of Brother Jim's conversion. I posted the clipping so that I would see it everyday as a reminder of how God really can turn the heart of someone who has different plans. Miracles like that still happen: Brother Jim's life is proof.

I still have the article and think of Brother Jim when I help with prison ministry. God's work in the heart of Brother Jim will continue to have an eternal impact in the lives of many.

You will be sorely missed Brother Jim. May you now rest in peace. I can remember our long talks while I worked at the Herman Mini Mart. You were a very good friend and listener.

My husband, Joe Tarquinio, and I had the distinct honor of traveling to Rockview for the annual St Dismus celebration and spending time with Brother Jim each year. I am certain the inmates at Rockview are heartbroken to hear of his passing. We were also blessed to have him co-celebrate our wedding 4 1/2 years ago along with Father Pete. Brother Jim always called me "Plucky"(my name is Rose) his gentleness, humor and faith was a sight to behold. How I loved our trips and meals with the crew from Erie"s Our Lady of Mercy choir. I have shared his story with the inmates I work with and I will forever cherish his book. Rest in peace and know that you have touched all of our lives and will never be forgotten..... with much Love Rose & Joe Tarquinio Erie PA

Br. Jim was a joy to talk too. Many times I would pick him up from the bus stop as it was snowing but he had to get out to the Waterworks to read and talk to people. My heart goes out to his Brother Friars and to any and all of those who's life he has touched. I am sure Our Lord greeted home with open arms.
