WINSTON-SALEM — James Leroy Whitener, 82, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008, at Magnolia Creek Assisted Living Center.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Charles Hutchens and Rev. John Burton officiating.
Mr. Whitener was born in Guilford County to the late Harry and Mabel Foutain Whitener. He loved the ocean and surf fishing whenever he got a chance. James served his country proudly in the Navy.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Isabel Dunivant Whitener; son, Jim Whitener; grandson, James Daniel Whitener; and sister, Murrel Rich.
He is survived by grandsons, Chris Whitener and wife, Judi of Eden and Josh Whitener of Shallotte, N.C.; and daughter-in-law, Billie Whitener of Reidsville.
The family will receive friends at the home of Billie Whitener, 145 Somerset Drive, Reidsville. There will be no formal visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Carolina Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28215.
