Jane McCarty Shaffer, 84, of Westminster, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Transitions Health Care in Sykesville. Born March 7, 1926, in Mount Union, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Cloyde and Ella McCarty. She was the wife of Clyde L. Shaffer, her husband of 54 years, who she married June 11, 1955. She spent her early life in Mount Union and graduated in 1944. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Juniata College in 1948 and her Masters in Equivalency in 1970 from Chambersburg College. Before retirement, she was a school teacher in Mount Union for her first eight years of teaching and then moved to Baltimore County Schools where she taught for 30 years, with the majority of time as a 12th grade English teacher. She was an avid bridge player and crossword puzzle solver. She was a member of Dundalk United Methodist Church for more than 30 years, serving as church organist for more than 15 years. She was also a member of Deer Park United Methodist Church in Westminster for 25 years. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Gretchen Shaffer, of Owings Mills; son and daughter-in-law Glenn and Peggy Shaffer, of Dundalk; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Marion McCarty; and by brothers Dean and Gerald McCarty. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Friends will also be received from 10 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Thursday at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Road, Westminster, with the Rev. Basil Day officiating. Interment will be in Deer Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Road, Westminster, MD 21157.
