3 friends and myself went to Charleston on a girl's get-a-way weekend. We were lucky enough to pick Mrs. Thornhill as our guide. We are still talking about her even this many years later. She made our trip and gave us stories of the city that we would not have heard from anyone else. God Rest her beautiful Soul!

Jane was such a special person. Shortly after I met her in the 1970's I was doing a tour in one of the Mercedez Mini Buses that the company that Pat and I owned was using for tours at that time. I pulled over in front of First Scots and Jane hopped on the coach and road several blocks with me to check out my tour. Fortunately she was very complimentary. Through the years I got to know her better and she did several garden tours for groups that CCGS had in town. She was always animated, fun and a pleasure to be with. She will truly be missed by everyone and I know especially the St. Michael's congregation. I know that St. Michael is taking wonderful care of her in heaven..
My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Jane's passing. I remember her so vividly and fondly from my days at Charleston Oil Co. She was a great lady.

Ted,
I am sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a very important figure in preserving Charleston history and gave tours of the city with personal pride. I hope that you and all of your family will find peace at this difficult time.

I met Jane Thornhill in 1978 right after I moved to the Charleston area at the Preservation Society of Charleston. I had earlier met Liz Young and had become friends with her. She deemed herself as my Charleston Mom as my mom lived in Saluda, SC. At a gathering I sat between Liz and Jane. Liz introduced me to Jane and commented that she was my Charleston mom. Immediately, Jane said "If you are going to be her Charleston mom, then I will be too. She can always use two moms here in Charleston." And so they became my two Charleston moms. I became very involved with the Preservation Society, even was on the board with these two fine ladies, and loved them dearly. They were always ready to give me advice. When Liz passed, Jane called me and said, "Just because Liz died on us, I am still going to be your Charleston mom." She was a sweetheart. I knew Van Noy and John G, and I treasure my friendship with them, also. The funny part to this story is that I never knew why they both thought I needed a Charleston mom, but I am so glad that they were always there with hugs, laughs, and great motherly advice. Jane, RIP. You were a lady that everyone admired. Charleston is a much better place since you were here to guide and direct her preservation efforts. We are all better people having been in the presence of such a caring and wonderful lady - a true Charleston LADY. I will love you forever. She called me the "other Jane".

As a volunteer for the Preservation Society for many years, I was fortunate enough to meet Jane and was so glad that I did. She was always so kind to me and so willing to share her knowledge. She was definitely a blessing to the city and to the citizens. May she Rest In Peace.
