She was such a positive influence on so many. Somehow she got me to call lines at college Volleyball at UNO. I can´t remember if I was still at Franklin or post H.S. .... We connected somehow while I was at Franklin and I think I would go the the snowball stand across Carrollton for the very large cookies they made .... I remember green hall and her office and how after freshman year in the gym suits we agreed to switch to t shirts and shorts `78, or so.... She was a strict Teacher but fair... Take care y´all,
Love Always, Naomi BFHS `81
Would love to hear about what has happened since her passing ...
I also attended some Summer School classes for my UNO degree where Coach Wilderotter was teaching at the time ...
My niece and nephew also attended Franklin at the newer campus (Sarah and Jeff Smith. `99, and `02, I think)

Dearest Family and Friends of Jane:

It is for today's Memorial Day and all the Memorial Days still yet to come. Jane's loving, kind, and christian spirit will live on through all of us. It is because of all the persons who lives she touched both on and off the tennis court. Our family gives thanks daily: that, Jane graced our lives always for the better.

Cordially,

It's the little things, the small, everyday occurrences that you'll remember. The laughs, the stories, the smiles. And even though it seems like you can never recover from your loss, it is these very memories that will help push the pain away and bring back the smiles.

Prayers of love, peace and understanding to you all ( Carl, Eric,Megan, Mary, and other family members!)

Megan, Mary and Carl,

We are so sad to hear of Jane's passing. We got to know her during the Dominican volleyball and basketball years. She had such a sweet disposition and upbeat personality, even on the rare occasions in which DHS was losing. She will be greatly missed.

May 17, 2013

My prayers are with you and your family at this time. Eric, we are so sorry for your loss!

Ms. Lew was the toughest science teacher I ever had at Franklin, but the reason I aced biology in college. I am shocked to learn that she left us so young. She was so cool, and I remember when she was pregnant with the twins--she used to ask me to sneak to Burger King to get her lunch during 4th period!

She was probably the most positive, most influential, and most supportive teacher I had at Franklin. I am grateful for having been her student.

To All,

I am so sorry to hear of Jane's passing. She was one of the first people I met when I started working at Franklin in 1985 and one of the very few who reached out to me. She gave me her notes to help me ease into the work and sincere words of encouragement. It meant a lot.

My deepest sympathy,

May 16, 2013

Dear Carl, Eris, Mary Elizabeth & Megan
Words can not say how deeply saddened my family was to hear of the passing of Jane.
Jane was such a wonderful, talented, gifted, giving person. She was always so upbeat. She so loved her family and friends. Our friendship began when Eric was in preschool with my son. We just connected.
And even though we lived miles apart we never lost that bond. She was a dear friend. We always kept in touch and following our children as they grew. We were always keeping up with all the sports our kids were in, high school and college. We always shared our love of sewing and our latest sewing adventures. Jane was so proud of her family. She was so proud of Mary Elizabeth and Stephen's wedding, and thrilled on Megan's upcoming wedding.
Jane was a gem. I know you will miss her so much.
Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sterling & Pat Baldwin

May 16, 2013

Sterling and I were so saddened to hear of Jane's illness and passing. We have such fond memories of all the gatherings with the coaches from Abramson.

Carl, you and your children are in our prayers and please know that God will comfort you in your sorrow.

As so clearly illustrated in the comments here, Jane had a profound, positive impact on many lives as a teach/friend/coach. What a wonderful legacy she has left behind!

Jane and I attended Fortier together but never had a class together and really didn't know each other. When we ran into each other at UNO, registering for our first courses, we recognized each other. Amid a sea of strangers, we reacted as if we had been best friends for years and were delighted to find that both of us had enrolled in the same section of Geography 1. Classes started on a Monday, and when the geography professor dismissed class early, Jane and I walked together to the university center to get Cokes. Over the weekend, Robert Kennedy had been assassinated, and outside the university center was a reporter from WVUE seeking comment. Jane was so pretty that, not surprisingly, he stopped us, and we were on TV that evening, giving our reactions to the assassination. Jane's path and mine never crossed again after we finished taking geography, but I shall always remember her with much fondness. As others have said, this was too soon. My thoughts and sympathy are with Jane's family.

May 16, 2013

Jane Lew cared very much for her students and she expected much from them. I was in her co-ed P.E. class at Ben Franklin in 1978. One spring day, she had us all on our backs on the asphalt doing sit-ups and leg lifts. There were complaints from the Freshman girls as the sit-up counts went higher, and I remember her saying in a voice that could be heard over all the moans: "girls you'll thank me this summer when you have nice flat stomachs". She didn't accept whining, and she pushed us to be our best and go hard. Generally she got that from her students. I am very sorry for the loss felt by her daughters, husband, brothers, and all who loved her. This was too soon.

May 15, 2013

Coach Lew was a wonderful teacher. She inspired me to do my best. She was a great coach for girls' intramural sports (GAA) at Ben Franklin. With fondest memories and prayers for her family, Linda Young

A truely amazing woman, that I was given the oppertunity to know. Lunches with Jane, Carl and Dr. Hevron will forever live in my memory. Carl, you and Jane brought such laughter to those lunches especially when you would banter back and forth about the dog. The days with Jane at Dominican's basketball games as we cheered on our daughters these are times I will hold very dear to me. Yes, this woman could sew, cook, and keep you in tears with her wonderful sense of humor. She loved her family and friends and you knew it everytime you were with her. She will be sadly missed and always remembered by me. Carl, Eric, Mary and Megan you will be in my thoughts and prays.

I am so shocked to hear of Ms. Lew's passing...I say Ms. Lew b/c that's who she was to me while at Franklin from '75-'78. PE was not my favorite subject...did I say, PE was not my favorite. And God bless Ms. Lew...she knew I was a lost athletic soul. I used to hide on the opposite of the block so I wouldn't have to run around the block twice,...until she caught me and a few others one day. Then I totally surprised her when I made two basketball dunks from the sidelines at mid-court...shocked myself, too. And a couple of years later, I signed up for a tennis class, and who walks in as the instructor...? Ms. Lew!!!!! I will never forget her quick wit and humorous comments on my reluctance to do PE activities...she really was a cool teacher. I'm so sorry for her family. And I will keep you all in my prayers. Much affection coming your way from someone who remembers Jane so very fondly...very sad news, indeed.

I loved your mom and am so thankful for her touch on my life!

I have truly fond memories of Miss Lew from my time at Ben Franklin ('79). Counting out sit ups as we did them in the hallway between lockers, clapping along with the music for square dancing, encouraging us as we ran laps around the block. She always made the best of every situation and encouraged us to do the same. My deepest sympathies to her family and friends. May our Lord carry you close during this time of loss.
