Janet M. Lockhart

Jan Lockhart was born on January 2, 1930 in Bellingham, WA to Margaret and Russell Lockhart. She was raised on a dairy farm in Happy Valley, Bellingham. Periodically she was awakened at night to chase cows who had broken through the fences, enticed by the neighbors’ gardens. She graduated from Bellingham High School where she was an honorary member of the Usher’s Club, was a member of the BHS Band, only girl of the Trumpet Trio, and later an active member of the BHS Alumni Band. Upon graduation she worked for Abshire Realty, followed by working as a bookkeeper and policy writer for Dawes Insurance Agency. In 1960 she was employed by BHS as a library aide and was in charge of ASB accounts. In 1965 she was the first person hired by the potential principal of Sehome High School. She was charged with ordering all the supplies and equipment for the classrooms and offices from the blue prints of Sehome. Later, when the school went computerized she was charged with setting up the main frame and entering the transcripts, scheduling and attendance records as the registrar. Her love of music filled her life. She was the choir director at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church for many years and her beautiful voice was shared with her church family. She attended Skagit Valley College, Western Washington University and Central Washington University where she pursued courses in Business. Jan became a lifetime member of the Loyal Escorts (an Auxiliary) of the Women Marines Association in 1980 and attended two National Conventions-Seattle and Camelback, Arizona. She is survived by her cousin and caregiver, Linda Lockhart, as well as many cousins and friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Highland Care Center, for their love and care, and especially to Darlene. Memorials may be made to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be held at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale on Friday, September 20th at 12 Noon. Pastor Joel Langholz will be officiating.
