Janet McCalmon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Janet Kay McCalmon of Norman, OK passed on August 26, 2025 in the loving company of family at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Janet was born to parents Mary Joyce and William Ray Fleming on August 24, 1961 in Wichita, KS. Janet graduated from Norman High School in 1979 and the University of Oklahoma in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass-communications and a minor in marketing. On September 26, 1981 she married David Brent McCalmon and together they raised children Brent Matthew and Morgan Nichole. Janet was a successful entrepreneur and also taught preschool and kindergarten at the Pumpkin Shell School for over 10 years. Spending years as a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa and First Presbyterian Church in Norman, Janet was steadfast and strong in her Christian faith. She was known to her family and friends as an avid lover of all animals and always enjoyed watching cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies as well as OU football and softball games. She is remembered by many as a dependable source of comfort and advice who always made herself available to listen without judgement. Janet put hard work into caring for the McCalmon family ranch in Pink, OK to reap the abundant joy of being a host to family and friends and being "Grommy" to the beloved children in her life. Janet always knew what to give something to make it flourish and thrive; her gift for gardening mirrored the effect she had on the people she touched throughout her life. Janet was predeceased by her parents, her mother-in-law Julia Ann McCalmon, and dear friend Betty Ann Patrick. She is survived by her husband and two children as well as father-in-law Dr. Jack D. McCalmon; siblings Patricia Lynn and William Howard Fleming and wife Jan Bacon Fleming; niece Kellie Ann Fleming and family; nephews Christopher Fleming and Kyle Boyse and their families; niece Chelsea Hartley, her husband Owen, and daughters Avery and Madeline; daughter-in-law Steffany and her mother Karen; and daughter Morgan's partner Benjamin Fox. Janet and her family wish to extend their deep gratitude and admiration to the many compassionate medical professionals who aided in Janet's care at Mercy 4AB.

The McCalmon's have elected to mourn privately for the weeks immediately following Janet's passing. They intend to hold a celebration of life in the near future for family and friends. Details of such are not confirmed at this time. Please email [email protected] with your first and last name to receive the announcement of information regarding that celebration.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the organization Pet Peace of Mind, a charity which assists in the care and readoption of the pets of hospice patients around the country, or another charity of the donor's choice.

Janet was a remarkable woman who had such a good heart! Her smile and kind words and that great sense of humor will be missed. She helped me family when we moved to Norman many years ago. Her family became our family. To Tickle Man and Sissy we love you and thanks for sharing Janet with us!

Janet gave the best hugs, made everyone feel welcome and included and had the best smile. I always felt safe in her presence. She loved her family fiercely and had a way of making everyone feel at home. Sending so much love to all who are grieving her passing. She was a very special woman

My heart is with the McCalmon family during this difficult time. Mrs. Janet was such a beautiful soul, and I´m so grateful to have known her kindness and warmth. To Morgan my forever elementary school best friend I am lifting you and your family in prayer and holding you close in love. May you find comfort in the precious memories and in the love that surrounds you.
