Janice Alexander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 19, 2025.
Janice Marie Alexander ( Lyon), 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Woodinville, Washington, on April 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Known for her grace, humor, and unwavering spirit, Jan touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know her.

Born on February 11, 1941, in Minot, North Dakota, Jan was the daughter of James Andrew Lyon and Delores Irene Lyon. She was raised in the Catholic Church, which instilled in her a strong foundation of faith that guided her throughout life. Her educational journey began at Blanchet High School and continued at Lake Washington Adult Education, where she proudly earned her high school diploma in 1965. She later pursued higher education at Bellevue College, receiving an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration.

Jan embarked on a remarkable thirty-year career with NC Machinery, a Caterpillar dealership. Starting in the secretarial pool, she steadily climbed the ranks through dedication and perseverance, ultimately becoming a purchasing agent in the Engineering Department. In what was often considered a male-dominated environment, Jan stood out for her resilience and wit-never afraid to challenge the "good ole boys" mentality with her sharp mind and unyielding work ethic.

In her early years, Jan and her first husband Marvin Adams built a life together in Kirkland, Washington, raising their three children. Married young and facing financial challenges, they often said, "We may not have a lot of money but we always have a lot of love." One of their proudest accomplishments was purchasing their first home when Jan was just 22 and Marv 24-a modest house that remained Jan's favorite despite later upgrades. Their shared love for boating led them to become longtime members of the Puget Sound Yacht Club, where they created cherished memories exploring Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Their marriage spanned thirty-seven years until Marv's untimely passing from a stroke in 1994-a loss that remained one of Jan's deepest heartbreaks.

Years later, fate brought Carl Alexander into Jan's life at a Parents Without Partners dance. She was immediately drawn to his charm and dancing skills-and soon discovered his kind heart matched his handsome good looks. They married in 1998 and shared many joyful years together. With Carl by her side, Jan became involved with the Nile Shrine Organization and was an active member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America through Ahmes Court #41.

Jan led an incredibly full and vibrant life. A passionate traveler, she visited over fifty countries by cruise ship, riverboat, and guided tours-always eager to explore new cultures and experiences. Her interests were wide-ranging: she was a member of Master Gardeners of Snohomish County; enjoyed culinary adventures as part of the Rolling Pin Club; participated in book clubs; and maintained former ties with the Puget Sound Yacht Club. She loved theater and dance, found joy in cooking and baking for loved ones, and never passed up an opportunity for a good shopping spree.

She also found strength and solace as a devoted member of ALANON. Her faith continued to be an important part of her life as she became an active member of Cedar Cross United Methodist Church in Mill Creek and later Bear Creek United Methodist Church in Woodinville-communities where she formed meaningful friendships and received heartfelt support.

Jan's greatest pride came from her family. She offered steadfast love and sound advice without judgment-serving not only as a mother but also as a best friend and trusted confidant. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Kim Rutledge and Sandra Adams Carson; her stepson Mathew Alexander; her brother Craig Lyon; grandchildren Jennifer Carpinito, Amanda Rutledge, Austin Adams, Nicole Adams, and Alex Andersen; great-grandchildren Mira Carpinito and Caleb Carpinito.

She was preceded in death by her parents James Andrew Lyon and Delores Irene Lyon; her beloved husbands Marvin Adams and Carl Alexander; and her son Michael Adams.

Jan lived each day with purpose-embracing adventure, nurturing relationships, offering wisdom freely, and meeting life's challenges with courage. Her legacy is one of strength wrapped in kindness-a life well-lived that will continue to inspire those who knew her.

May her memory bring comfort to all who carry it forward. A Funeral Service will be held on June 8, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM at Bear Creek United Methodist Church 16530 Avondale Road NE. The family thanks you in advance for your support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to: Evergreen Hospice & Evergreen Health Foundation 12040 NE 128th St., MS#5 Kirkland, WA 98034

Jan's warmth, love and bright spirit will remain forever in our hearts

My husband, Ralph, and I knew Jan and Marv when we were members of PSYC. Marv had a great sense of humor and was taken too soon. Jan was a wonderful woman, and it was a privilege to know her. Our condolences to her family.

Because of Jan, I joined the Ladies Oriental Shrine just so I could be in the Dancers. She suited me up with my first dance costume (she had suitcases full of fun stuff). She the Dancers gave us permission to play "dress up" just like little girls. She was fun, witty, classy, and a dear friend.

In loving memory of my dear sweet Mom! I feel blessed to have had all the special times we shared together. You were definitely the best role model and confidante a daughter could have. I will miss you terribly and will cherish the memories of you always
