Janice O'Brien Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2025.
On 2/13/25, with mixed feelings, Janice left her many, many friends on this earth to join her Lord, and all the saints she loved so well in heaven. (She is planning many new careers there.)

Janice was born in Beloit, Wisconsin, to Jane and Walter, "Rocky" Rockers, the first of five children. Her indomitable spirit propelled her through a country childhood until, at the age of 14, she entered the convent as a postulant in the Order of Saint Agnes in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. After 13 years as a consecrated nun, during which time she graduated from Marion College and began teaching elementary school, she was so inspired by the speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr., she begged to be released from her vows so she could work in poor inner-city neighborhoods in Chicago. She continued to teach elementary school and took a lead in Sunday School activities at her local church. It was there she met her beloved life-mate of 50 years, Jim O'Brien.

At the age of 30, Janice became Jim's wife, and the mother of Daniel, Cary and Tom, his 3 boys, whose mother had died young. In the ensuing years, their family was enlarged with their son, Peter, and four foster children. In their 60s, after the tragic death of Peter and his wife, Jennifer, Janice and Jim raised their three young grandchildren Jason, Guinivere and Kyra.

Aside from her enduring love for her God and her church, Janice worked tirelessly to succor the homeless, the forgotten and those in need of a listening ear or a kind word. With Utah Phillips, Joanne Robinson, Cindy Maple and Don Lee, and, of course, her husband Jim, a vision for shelter and services for Nevada City's homeless was realized in the founding of Hospitality House. More recently, Janice and Jim created Sierra Roots, a non-profit that responds to the everyday needs of the homeless in our community.

Janice's inner life was as busy as her outer life. Having discovered the profound power of conscious dreaming work, she led seminars in the United States, Thailand and Australia for therapists, health care workers and people in business and in the diplomatic corps. She is presently a Lay Associate of the Sisters of Mercy of America, a religious order with a specific devotion to the sick, the lost, and the forgotten in our society.

Janice was predeceased by her husband, Jim O'Brien, her two beloved sons, Cary and Peter, her brother Ronald Rockers and sister Leeanne Rockers Verhaalan. She is survived by her sons Daniel (Catherine) and Tom (Kathryn), 4 grandsons Sean, Kevin, James and Jayson, 3 granddaughters Mary, Guinevere and Kyra, her great-grandsons Killian and Osiris, and a wonderful assortment of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She will be missed by many people!

Janice has touched and changed many lives in her 85 years on this earth and will likely continue to care for those she loves by sending loving blessings (and most likely, advice) to them from the other side of the veil.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Janice at 11:00 am on Friday, 2/21, at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Mercy Associates through St. Patrick's Church, Grass Valley.

Janice was a real lady, a fine and fun lady. She taught me much about aging in faith gratefully--the struggles as well as the joys.

I believe that the most heartbreakingly beautiful thing we all, as sinners, could ever "see", would be God's smile! I know it would absolutely crush me. Years ago, while on the air, I expressed this to Miss Janice, followed by the revelation that I was certain she made God smile on a daily basis. I should have added to that comment, "ALL DAY LONG!"
I will not try to think of any comparison! I know there are none!
CONGRATULATIONS, MISS JANICE O'BRIEN, ON YOUR GRADUATION!!! ALL OF MY LOVE AND RESPECT, TO YOU.

So many memories, over 25 years of friendship. Therapeutic Massages for Jim, Peter, and J. Conversations about family, homelessness, addictions, and living dreams. Attendance at funerals, family gatherings, christening of first great-grandson, concerned citizens groups. Janice had a depth of character, strength, and resilience, spirituality, and compassion that far surpassed most. Her grandchildren were most important to her, and she did her best to tear them with Love. My friend, and friend to many. She lives in my heart always.

I met Jim and Janice when my husband and I adopted our 4 year old grandson. It was at an adoption support group in Nevada City. They gave me hope, insite, love, encouragement, and oh so much help in our new journey. We were already retired and about to go to kindergarten at Mt. St. Mary's. They were wonderful people and I will miss them dearly. God's blessings to them and their family.

I received training through Sierra roots from Janice. At this point she had already become my friend. We enjoyed many conversations about her family, her life, her dedication to help the homeless and why. I love her. I am grateful for her presence in the world.

What an incredible lady! I saw her story today online and I just wish I could have met Janice. She is an such an inspiration. How fortunate Nevada County was to have had Janice lead the way for so many people in need. Such a blessing!

I was blessed to get to know Janice when our young granddaughters were in Girl Scouts together. She was so positive, always smiling and thinking of others, she seemed to take challenges life would send her way in stride. Enjoy eternal life with our Lord and Savior Janice. God Bless You; Until we meet again-----------

Janice and I became close as Sisters of St Agnes. We had a deal regarding visiting which has not yet been fulfilled. I wait to see what she is going to do about it.

I am not surprised that she was so involved in making life better for others. She proves the point that " by virtue of our baptism, we are all missionary disciples" (Pope Francis).

I grieve with you, but we were all blessed through having known her.

Janice was special, I will never forget the time when I was young that my Uncle Ralph stopped in Chicago so we could visit Janice.

I am thankful to have known Janice, even if it was for only a short while. She was so positive and uplifting, always up for a new adventure! It was fun to `kidnap´ her to go to Bible Study. She would always want to come and then she´d ask, "where are we going?" I praise God for knowing you, Janice!

My memory of Janice is primarily as Jim's wife and the several years
Jeanne Dickenson and I spend in working with her for Sierra Roots.
She had a passion for the homeless, and it was infectuous. She will
be missed by the homeless and friends like Jeanne and me.

I have so memories to share. Memories of Jan,Jim, me and my wife together. Memories of vacations in the islands and Florida. Train ride through Mexico and sharing a castle in Ireland as well as meeting up and down the coast of California. Some serious conversations but mostly Joy and laughter. After some 50+ years together we wouldn´t retell our stories , rather, we would just say a key word then break out in laughter. Card games were always part of our times. Jan did not like to lose. She would claim that the 3 of us had plotted against her when she did lose. We didn´t. Being the only one left, I have so many fond memories. I am blessed to have been a part of that foursome
