Janina Tomkiel

Janina Tomkiel, 79, of Vernon, beloved wife for 40 years of the late Henryk Tomkiel, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.

Born in Pomygacze, Poland, on November 15, 1928, daughter of the late Jozef and Bronislawa (Dunaj) Zajkowski, she had lived in Poland for many years before moving to the United States 22 years ago. Janina had lived in South Windsor for 10 years before moving to Vernon 12 years ago. She was a communicant of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church in Hartford and was also a member of the Rosary Society. A very religious woman, Janina also maintained a membership in Radio Maria in Poland and was a strong supporter of their programming. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers, traveling to Poland to visit her family and friends and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She leaves two sons, Mark Tomkiel and his wife, Teresa, of South Windsor and Jan Tomkiel and his wife, Alina, of Vernon; a daughter, Elizabeth Tomkiel of Vernon; four grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Kasia and Nicole; and a sister, Genowefa Zajkowski of Poland. Besides her husband she was predeceased by a brother, Jozef Zajkowski, and a sister, Stanislawa Wasilewski.

Family and friends may gather on Monday, April 14, 9:15 a.m., at the Waszkelewicz South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford, followed by a Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Hartford. Burial will follow in Valley Falls Cemetery, Vernon.

Her family will receive friends on Sunday, April 13, 3 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home.
