Janis Nichols Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2025.
Janis (Smith) Nichols, 78, passed away peacefully Aug. 8, 2025, in Stockton, Calif.

Born Dec. 21, 1946, in Oroville, Jan lived a vibrant and spirited life that touched many.

Jan grew up in Oroville and graduated from Oroville High School, going on to earn her AA from Yuba College. She spent her young adult years in Sacramento, working at legal firms before starting her long career with Caltrans. She met her husband, Ron, in Sacramento, and they moved to Salinas before settling in Stockton in 1980.

Jan was vivacious and charismatic, always ready with a story and a smile. Her presence lit up any room she entered. She had an enduring sense of humor, even dressing up as her boss for a parody video her team made for Boss's Day in the '90s. And whether it was the soulful harmonies of the Pointer Sisters or the rock rhythms of Bob Seger, music was a constant companion in her life and a reflection of her joyful spirit.

She found happiness in simple pleasures and meaningful moments. She loved adventures in baking and cooking, and was known for her spaghetti sauce and fruit jams. Her family cultivated a garden that thrived in the Central Valley climate, delivering potatoes, tomatoes and strawberries consistently, some of the latter being eaten before they could make it into the house.

Her trips along the California coast were among her favorite pastimes-she introduced her daughters to the wonders of tidepooling and prioritized vacations in quieter locations like Monterey and Pescadero, although she did acquiesce once to a much-requested trip to Disneyland.

Her legacy lives on through the love she shared with her family and the countless stories that will continue to be told by those who knew her best.

Jan is survived by her husband, Ron, and her daughters, Robin Blomster and Kim Kissell (Patrick). She also leaves behind her sister Judie Russell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and LaVerne Smith.

Private services will be held.
