Jared Srole Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 19, 2025.
Jared Srole, devoted partner, steadfast friend, loving brother, uncle, and son died on March 18, 2025 after his heart stopped while he was on the treadmill at his gym in Astoria, Queens.

He was 45.

His unexpected death deprived him of his planned wedding to Julia Hamburger, the love of his life.

Jared had a passion for sports and music that ran deep. He had been looking forward to cheering on the Washington Capitals during a triumphant season and witnessing the team's star forward, Alex Ovechkin overtake Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record. He appreciated all kinds of music but paid especially close attention to the drummers, having been one himself in high school. Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Tool's Danny Carey were two of his favorites. As a customer service team leader for Nespresso, he was a beloved colleague, appreciated for his steady, understated style, wry wit, and devotion to his team, whom he dubbed the "Grand Crüe" after the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe.

Over time, he developed a love of the theater, travel, and cooking - interests he eagerly shared with Julia. Before working with Nespresso he was a front of house manager for the Lyric Theatre on Broadway, working on various Broadway shows including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Sunday in the Park with George.

He was a man of daily routines and a self-described avid indoorsman. Every evening, he completed the New York Times and Washington Post crossword puzzles and other word games, including Wordle, Connections, and Spelling Bee, often enlisting Julia's help.

Jared Michael Srole was born in Washington, D.C., to Bill and Maxine Srole. He was raised in Potomac, Maryland, where he attended public schools, played hockey and took up drumming. He later attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 2002 with a degree in business administration.

At age 26, Jared was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a challenge he faced with resilience, determination, and humor. His dark wit was reflected in his wardrobe - t-shirts with messages like "Insulin or Die" and "The Dead Pancreas Society," along with black baseball caps that paid homage to the Washington Capitals, the Montreal Canadiens hockey team, and Indiana University in Bloomington, Julia's hometown. The couple joined friends and family there last April to watch the solar eclipse.

Even in the smallest details, Jared's humor and personality shone through. When he and Julia adopted Penny, a Shih Tzu-Poodle-Chihuahua rescue, Jared became her devoted "Papa." True to his style, Penny's collar featured skulls rather than hearts or other more traditional adornments.

Jared's presence in the lives of his family and friends was defined by loyalty, humor, and an encyclopedic knowledge of rock history. He never missed a birthday, sending carefully chosen gifts, and always checked in frequently when someone was sick or injured. He adored his niece and nephew, Macie and Ethan, who shared that affection, calling him "Unky Red." Jared showed keen interest in their lives and showered them with unique gifts, including Metallica t-shirts. He had his parents' signatures tattooed down each arm.

He embraced Julia's family, the Hamburgers, as his own, attending their summer reunions on Cape Cod.

Jared is survived by his longtime partner, Julia Hamburger; his father, Bill Srole; his brother Jeff Srole and wife Alanna Vanacore; his sister Jan Konikoff and husband Bryan Konikoff and their children Macie and Ethan; and a circle of devoted friends.

Jared was an organ donor, which enabled him to save the lives of three organ recipients upon his death. His departure was accompanied by a beautiful honor walk at Mt. Sinai Hospital Queens where he was surrounded by family, with dozens of hospital staff lining the hallway. As he was wheeled into the operating room, music from Metallica blared from a handheld speaker and family members laughed and cried.

Donations in Jared's memory may be made to T1International (t1international.com), a Type 1 diabetes nonprofit, Metallica's Foundation (allwithinmyhands.org), or a charity of your choice.

Jared was one of the kindest friends I´ve ever known. I was always impressed by his passion for music and endlessly entertained by his wit and sense of humor. He was exceptionally generous in sharing his time and his talents. He helped lift me up in a way that only the best of friends do. I love you and I miss you Jared.

What a beautiful way to honor his memory. I did not know Jared, only through Bill and Becky. By reading all of these entries into the guest book, it is clear that he lived fully, the short life he had, making close friends of co-workers and enjoying being thoughtful and generous and giving to those he cared about.

Jared was a fantastic nephew. Kind. Caring. Loving. In spite of the many health issues of his own he had to deal with, he regularly called inquiring about his old uncle´s health. So selfless. And now, Jared, you are with your mom and your grandparents that you loved so much. Jared, my friend, you are dearly missed.

Jared and I are first cousins once removed, meaning his dad Bill and I are first cousins. We are all part of the large extended Rivke Family, which has been gathering regularly in the Chicago area since 1910 to celebrate our kinship and our love for one another. Even though I never got to spend much time with Jared, reading the other messages here reminded me of what a fine guy he was, a mensch in Yiddish. A friend, a partner, a colleague, a cousin, a lover and a true and devoted member of our human family. These are qualities that many may aspire to but sadly few attain. May his memory be an inspiration to all of us who he leaves behind.

Our heartfelt sadness and sympathy on the passing of Jared. We remember him as a child and young man as we lived on the same street. As I think of him, I see his warm smile and think of his sweet nature. Life is not fair that his life was so short. A good young man!

Oh J where do I begin? You were more than a supervisor, you were and will forever be my friend. A friend whose lessons I will take with me for the rest of my days. Lessons of a gentle, old soul, kindness, laughter, giving ourselves grace, working with integrity and facing life´s challenges even when they´re extra hard. These moments we are navigating without you are so difficult here at work but your Team Grand Crue will forever be yours my friend.

The highest honor I can pay to Jared is that he was first and foremost a mensch. The meaning of this word is deep and it applies to every facet of Jared's life. Jared left a trail of mitzvahs (good deeds) behind him because of the man he was. All his colleagues can attest to that. His gift of life to others was his final mitvah. Our lives are better for having known him. - May his memory be a blessing.
