Jay Schwartzman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2024.
Jay Schwartzman, 74, of Poolesville, Maryland transitioned from this life on September 9th, 2024 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.

Jay was born at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC on July 29, 1950 to Samuel and Sonja Schwartzman. He graduated from Walt Witman High School in 1968. He then served in the United States Air Force where he received an honorable discharge in 1970. After this, he enrolled in two years of business classes at his local community college.

Jay went on to open the Beer Wine & Deli in Poolesville on Labor Day in 1975. He acted as owner and operator for 34 years. He spent countless hours manning his flat-top grill, where many crowned him the "King of Steak and Cheese." Members of the community knew that they could count on Jay to have exactly what they needed at his store. Even if all they needed was a good conversation and a soda. Jay truly loved the town of Poolesville, and played a key role as co-founder of the Poolesville Area Chamber of Commerce alongside other prominent business owners in 1979. He also served on the board as their first president.

Jay married his wife, Jennifer (Moropoulos), on June 26, 1983 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He loved her so much he married her for a second time on September 30, 2011. Jay was a friend to many, as well as a family man. He found true joy in watching his grandchildren laugh and play. You would always find him smiling when they were around. He enjoyed taking long car rides with his dogs. He was an avid music lover, with a special admiration for Jimmy Buffet, The Grateful Dead, The Alleman Brothers, and any classic rock. His retirement included purchasing season tickets to see the Washington Nationals play. He was a fan of all things DC sports.

Jay was preceded in death by his father, Samuel, his mother, Sonja, and his sister, Eileen Rodgers.

Jay is survived by his wife, Jennifer of Poolesville; his son Jason of Poolesville; son Thomas Schwartzman and spouse Morgan of Thurmont; and three grandchildren Isabella, Samuel, and Maximus.

A celebration of life with candlelight vigil will be hosted by the family on Saturday, September 14th at 5:00PM at Whalen Commons in Poolesville, Maryland. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 15th, 2024 at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, Maryland from 10AM-11AM. I loved sitting through zoom meetings during Covid with Jay. Finally getting to be with him in person reminded me how big his heart was. Rest in peace friend.

Never had a better Steak and Cheese than Jay's creations at Poolesville Beer Wine and Deli. Very kind soul and will be missed. On behalf of the 160 members of the Poolesville Area Chamber of Commerce in 2024, thanks for being involved in starting our local Business organization back in 1979 and proud to carry on the PACC's great work for our community into the future.

I asked Jay if he would make me a stake & cheese sub, he asked me what would you like on it, and a friendship was born! Thanks Jay, Bobby Haskins

Jay was the pillar of the community. After my first husband passed Jay took it upon himself to take care of me and my children. We used to spend so much time making memories at the deli. You will never be forgotten Jay. Now you'll be watching over all of us

13 years old! 1976. My father introduced me to him and he became a forever friend and fighter for all things Poolesville! He supported me through my many years as a
Commissioner and as a DJ through our common love for our community and music. I love that he always hosted my other favorite Jay (Jay Summerour) in front of the store every Poolesville Day right from the beginning! He will forever be remembered for being an anchor of our community. We love you Jay and wish you the best flight to the other side where all the good things come true. Sending love to Jennifer, Jason and Tommy and Jays beautiful grand children!

Jay was the epitome of Poolesville. He worked hard, he was kind, and he gave when you had nothing. Jay was one of the reasons Poolesville was awesome. I loved his shop and the stories he would tell while I was there. He was missed when he retired and he will always be missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to you all.
