Jay Skinner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 12, 2025.
Jay Junior Skinner, 90, passed away peacefully at home, holding his sweetheart's hand and surrounded by his family, on December 15, 2024.

Jay was born in Bedford, Wyoming, to Joseph Alma and Anna (Fluckiger) Skinner and was the youngest and last living of eleven children. At the age of twelve, his family relocated to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he spent his formative years. After graduating from high school, Jay married his high school sweetheart, L. Carolyn Hunt. Their marriage of 72 years was a remarkable testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they built their first home at just 19 years old and later moved to Northern California to raise their family and pursue new opportunities.

Jay was a natural athlete who enjoyed playing basketball and softball in his youth and became an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers, and BYU college football. He approached life's challenges with grit and determination, always supported by his devoted wife.

Jay worked in the newspaper industry for over 20 years. Beginning in the mail room, he advanced to management roles, where he showcased exceptional leadership and negotiation skills. After constructing his own home in Danville, California with his oldest sons, his passion for building homes eventually led him to establish a construction business with two of those sons. Jay worked as a general. contractor for 30 years, continuing his craft until the age of 74.

Jay was a life long, active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His life was defined by his strong faith in Jesus Christ, his warm smile, and his infectious laugh. He cherished time spent with family above all else and created lasting memories through visiting extended family, camping, and fishing trips, in his younger years. Known for his sharp mind, gift of storytelling, and deep love for people, Jay endeared himself to everyone he met.

He is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn; his children Alan (Lori), Dale, Mike (Paula), Susan Masters (Justin), Michelle Shea (SeVern), Mark (Carie), and Diane Gullion; 34 grandchildren; and 56 great-grandchildren.

Jay leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

Memorial service to be held on Saturday, February 8th, 2025 at 11:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1240 Junction Blvd, Roseville, CA 95678

Dad, I'm so glad you were able to live with me the last year and a half. It was our pleasure and and honor to have you here. It's not the same without you. We miss you, your smile, your stories, your laughter, and your sweet tenderness with mom. I love you Dad!!!

It's been a wonderful pleasure to know you and Carolyn! You've always been so gracious to me, and when I asked your daughter to marry me, I asked immediately to get your blessing, and I got it! (old fashioned, but...) It's been a pleasure to have you in our home in your final years, and there has been more than once that I've felt that our being able to get a home close to you was a blessing for us and you. (it was sooo difficult to find a home at that time!) We've certainly had miracles and blessings opened up to us as we served you. Thank you for your stories and infectious laugh! We miss you, but look forward too meeting you again through a perfect faith in Jesus Christ's sacrifice for all of us.
