Jaydon Nicholas Sommerfeld

Feb 1, 1998 - June 10, 2015

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, Jaydon Nicholas Sommerfeld. Jaydon was an innocent victim in a senseless car accident that occurred on June 9, 2015 just east of Chestermere. Jaydon went to meet his Heavenly Creator on June 10, 2015 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

Jaydon was Sheri and Kenton's miracle baby, born February 1, 1998 in Edmonton, Alberta. He lived briefly in Red Deer with his family and finally settled in Chestermere in 2002 where he grew into the remarkable young man he was.

Jaydon's schooling began at Prairie Waters Elementary School, then at Chestermere Lake Middle School for grades 5 - 9. He was just finishing Grade 11 at Chestermere High School at the time of his death.

Jaydon loved hockey, playing with Chestermere Minor Hockey from the age of 6 to 16. He started playing lacrosse at age10 and loved it immensely from the moment he picked up his first lacrosse stick. He played 6 years of lacrosse with the Calgary Knights and this season was selected to play his first year of Junior "B" Tier 1 lacrosse with the Rockyview Silvertips. He was thrilled to be chosen for the team and was looking forward to a very successful rookie season.

When Jaydon wasn't playing hockey or lacrosse he could be found hanging out with his friends talking about cars, tossing the lacrosse ball in the yard with Brady, working out at the gym, spending time laughing and having tickle attacks with his precious Marina, playing video games and plucking away on the guitar.

He had a smile that could light up a room and was known for his distinctive blue eyes. His never ending care and consideration for others and his "work hard" ethic made an impression on everyone he met. His love of cars began as a toddler when he would make Mom and Dad sit outside construction sites in the van so he could watch the diggers work. His first "car" was his black Little Tykes truck that he used every day he could. He loved playing with his Hot Wheels cars and Tonka trucks in the sandboxes that Kenton made sure he always had available. He loved going to car shows with his Dad, Brady and his friends and his dream was to someday own a classic hot rod that made a lot of noise.

In keeping with the kind and unselfish way he lived, Jaydon's death benefited the lives of 8 total strangers, who received his organs - and will hopefully go on to live healthy and full lives. Sheri and Kenton both hope to someday meet the people whose Jaydon's life has saved in such an amazing way.

Jaydon is deeply loved by his family and friends, and will be forever missed by the many that he touched in his too short 17 years.

Jaydon is survived by his parents, Sheri and Kenton of Chestermere; his younger brother and best friend, Brady; his maternal grandparents Elmer and Margery Ensminger of Medicine Hat; his paternal grandparents, Rodney and Olga Sommerfeld, also of Medicine Hat; his beloved girlfriend Marina Laycraft of Langdon; aunts Shelley Hartung (Barry) of Chestermere, Pat Heller (Barry) of Medicine Hat; and uncle Curtis Ensminger (Janice Tate) of Medicine Hat; numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles; many best friends; and his best furry pal Koda. He will also be dearly missed by hundreds of classmates, teammates, teachers, coaches, and the community of Chestermere as a whole.

The family gratefully acknowledges the heroic efforts of the Chestermere and Strathmore EMS, Chestermere RCMP, STARS Air Ambulance, Foothills Hospital Emergency Unit, ICU and Transplant Team doctors and nurses.

John: 14: 1-3 Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

A celebration of Jaydon's life will take place on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Center Street Evangelical Church, 3900 2nd Street N.E., Calgary, AB. A private family graveside service will take place earlier that day.

I can't fathom the amount of grief you must feel and I am so incredibly sorry. Jaydon was and still is an extraordinary young man and the impact he left on everybody he met will rest in our hearts forever. Your son and brother was the light of this town and will not be forgotten. The life Jaydon lived is one that most people who age to 92 will never live. I cannot begin to describe the impact your son left on me and others and his courageousness and charismatic attitude are what so many strive to be. Jaydon is in our prayers along with you and your family and we hope that you find comfort in knowing what a phenomenal young man Jaydon was.

To Sheri, Kenton and Brady
We are sorry to hear of the passing of your precious son. He and our daughter were babies at the same time when Sheri was teaching at Living Waters with my husband Dave.
We still have the picture of the two babies in the sofa chair. We were shock and saddened to hear the news. We are praying for you, and that God's grace will keep you. May His peace be yours.

To The Family of Jadon Sommerfeld,
Although I do not know you or had the pleasure of meeting Jadon I feel compelled to send my condolences. The story of your loss hit an all too familiar chord with me. I too lost my 17 yr old son in a car accident. His birthday was also Feb. 1. He was an athlete and a good kid. Everyone's pain is different and personal and we would never wish this path on anyone else. Losing a child is a pain that can never be described until you have been there. My heart goes out to you all. May your memories of this special boy help to heal the holes in your hearts. He will be with you forever in your thoughts. Gone but not forgotten. I will continue to pray for you all as you navigate life without him.

Dear Sommerfeld Family, I just wanted to let you know how very sorry I am to hear about the loss of your dear son Jaydon. What a handsome young man. What an absolute gift he gave to 8 donor recipients. As the mother of a 16 year old son, I cannot imagine the absolute excruciating pain you are in. Why did this happen? Why was Jaydon on that highway at that intersection at that exact second? What if he would have been delayed a few seconds more? Why? What if? It is so hard to comprehend that you have lost the most precious thing in the world to you, your child. Although we give words of comfort, the most painful thing is that no one has the power to bring Jaydon back. The only thing we can do, is trust in Jesus. Trust in His promise of eternal life, and trust that Jaydon is now united with his dear Saviour. I was a student who drove to Chestermere High School back in the 1970's and I remember that particular intersection being dangerous back then! I will continue to keep you all in my prayers.
All the warmth in the world is extended to you all at this time. God be with you. Sincerely, Karen Ahern

To the Sommerfeld Family,

On behalf of the players, coaches and families of the Calgary Wranglers Junior B Lacrosse team we send special thoughts and heartfelt prayers to you and your family during this difficult time.

Jaydon was called up last year and played a few games with us and the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra and that was Jaydon. He was everything you would want in a teammate.

May you find the strength to face tomorrow in the love that surrounds you today.

I am so sad to hear of your devastating loss of your son. He sounded like a geat kid and he has ultimately made a huge difference by his choice to be an organ donor helping so many people. Kenton, I graduated high school with you in 1984 and can only imagine how devastated you and your family must be. My sincerest condolences. Bernice (Pederson) Fode.

The pain cuts so deep, and the loss unbearable. A small amount of solace can be found in the eight lives that will be bettered. I was touched by the Bible quote, you will find strength from him. RIP Jayden
