Katherine Lauinger Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jan. 15, 2011.

LAUINGER (nee Bohn), KatherineJanuary 26, 1925 January 6, 2011 Katherine Lauinger, age 85 years, passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospice, North Vancouver, BC with her six children at her side. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Linda Moore, Sarina (Eldon) Sanderson and Shari (Norman) van Roggen and her sons John (Hallein), David (Janet) and Dennis (Denise), as well as her grandchildren Rachel, Jake, Eric, Claire, Tyler, Georgia, Aiden, Hallie, Anna, James, Peter and Markus. Katherine was predeceased by her husband Peter and her son-in-law Rowland Moore. Katherine was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, the oldest of ten children. At age 18 she left the farm at Tramping Lake to become a teacher. She started her teaching career in the proverbial one room prairie schoolhouse eventually teaching in several other schools throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. She married Peter and moved to Spokane, Washington where they started their family. They later moved to Kelowna, B.C. to happily raise their six children on their small orchard paradise. They spent many happy years raising their family. When they retired they followed their children to North Vancouver where they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. Mom was the centre of our family, and we will forever miss her. Special thanks to the incredible nursing staff at the Lions Gate Hospice, who treated both our Mom and our families with such gentleness, respect and kindness. We will be forever grateful. Prayers will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 17th, with a funeral mass to be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 18th. Both events will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2725 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lions Gate Hospice Society by mail or online. I remember Pete and Kay when I lived in Kelowna. Ed and I spent may days of laughter with them. Peter was Ed's mom's brother. The cherry crop we all enjoyed. Rest in peace Kay and Peter. Kay was such a gentle soul to everyone that came into her path or kitchen "The coffee was always on with a smile and a laugh"

Dear Grandma,

I truly loved you from the bottom of my heart. I miss you dearly and think of you every day since you have passed. Like Rachel, I will miss the days when I would come to your house when I was too sick to attend school. I will never forget the countless games of Crib, Scrabble, and Chinese Checkers that we would play together. As well as watching endless hours of Bugs Bunny. Also I will not forget dragging you down to the swimming pool, and ping pong room in your old apartment. I have so many great memories with you and I will never forget them as long as I live. You were the best most loving grandmother I could have ever asked for.

Love Jake.

Dear Kay,
I still remember when we first met in kelowna, you taught me how to make schenend noodles and from that moment you always made me feel comfortable and accepted in the family. I will never forget your love for your family, strength, sense of humor and devotion to your faith. You were the best mother-in-law anyone could have and I will miss you very much.

I remember when Kaye used to teach me and her son Dennis in pre-school at the Immaculate school on Sutherland. She was a very good woman. I hadn't seen Peter or Kaye for many years but I thought of them often.

Kids I am sorry for your loss.

Mom,

My heart aches so much now that you are gone. You were such a wonderful Mother to me and I will miss you forever. I have so many good memories of you and will miss our games of crib, as well as watching hockey games and the Big Bang Theory with you. I will miss working on your patio garden with Sarina and Shari and sharing a beer after all our hard work. I am so glad you taught me how to make your yummy chicken and dumplings as this is now a favorite with Rachel and Jake. Also, I am grateful for the many Christmas' where you would help me with the stuffing for the turkey. Jake still likes yours the best! (Sorry Norm).

I hope you know how much I love you, and I am so very proud to have had you for my Mother. I am glad that your suffering is over and will see you again in heaven.

Love Linda.

Christmas Eve, 1989. A scant, sad year after losing my own lovely mum. While visiting my friends, Shari & Sarina, I learned I was to be alone on Christmas Eve. Not for long! I was immediately embraced by the entire Lauinger family and spent a wonderful, silly, laughter-filled evening eating, playing games, telling tales. And at the center of it all was Katherine, with a twinkle in her eye; a sweet, proud, strong lady in her favourite element - amongst her loving family. It was an absolute honour. Pleasure knowing you!
Love to the entire Lauinger clan and extended families. Sharon Sinclair

We fondly remember our few trips to BC to visit the aunties and uncles when we were kids. We always made a stop at Aunt Katie and Uncle Peter's and had a great time. Picking cherries right off the tree from the deck was a real treat with our mom eating a few too many on one occasion. I remember many stories from Dad on what a wonderful sister your mother was to him. As the youngest, Dad was always looked after and felt very loved. We our sorry we are not with you at this time, but we are all thinking of you and extend our sympathies. Aunt/Sister Katie will be greatly missed. Lots of love from the Tony Bohn Family

Dear Mom. You will always be remembered as a loving, caring person who welcomed me into your family unconditionally and with love. I will always appreciate that. One favorite memory I have of you is that soon after we met, Sarina and I would travel to visit you and Dad in Kelowna. As most of the family knows, you were a very good cribbage player. You and I would often play and usually there would be a $2 bet on the line. I can't remember a time when I did not take the $2 from you. You always paid me, always with good nature and a smile. We were able to kid each other and share a few laughs, and I will always think of those sweet moments when I think of you. Thanks for being such a sweetheart and a wonderful mother-in-law to me and a great grandma to Eric.

Was saddened to hear of the passing of your wonderful Mom and kindergarten teacher. I really enjoyed the video of the family. We as a family "the Liscias" owe a great deal of gratitude for the superb start my three children had with Kay as their teacher. Condolences to the family. Love to the family, from Jackie, Peter, Maria and John Liscia.

Dear Granny, I appreciated you so much when you were here, and miss you terribly now that you are gone. As your oldest Grandchild I was lucky enough to get to spend the most years with you, and the times we spent together will be in my memory forever. I will always rememer losing to you in ping pong and scrabble, going to prayer with you, and pretending to be sick just so mom would let me come hang out and watch ms. doubtfire with you :) I could not have asked for a better Grandma and now that you are peaceful in heaven, all I can do is try to make you proud, and I really hope I do Gran. Love you and miss you tons, Rachel xoxo
